Keeping Your Kids Safe in the Sun

Keeping your children protected when playing in the sun is a key priority for parents. We have all experienced the uncomfortable feeling of sunburn, and with nasty side effects such as dehydration and fevers; sun protection is crucial for a happy and healthy holiday with your little ones.

As the children enjoy plenty of time off school and outdoors, I thought it would be useful to take a look at the important matter of sun care for your children, and the top ways to keep your children safe in the sunshine this summer.

  • Sun Exposure
If possible, it is advised that exposure to the sun is limited between the hours of 10am and 2pm, when the sun is at its highest. UV rays at their strongest between this time, and therefore this can be the most harmful time for your children to out in the sun.
  • Sun Cream
Sun cream is a must when it comes to your children, even if the sun is hidden away. Always use a high protector sun cream for your children, 50+ is the recommended factor by researches. When purchasing your suncream, products designed especially for kids are generally best, as they generally have a very high factor and are gentle on the skin.
  • Suncream Application
To ensure maximum protection from your suncream, remember to apply 15 to 30 minutes before heading out in the sun, giving the cream time to absorb into to the skin. Suncream also needs to be reapplied every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating.

Camping with Kids – What to Bring

With summer winding down, and fall nipping at our heels, it’s the perfect time to look at great camping gear. My personal favorite times to camp are fall and spring- great weather, less crowds, and plenty of fun to be had. So what to pack? Here are some fun and easy ideas for a perfect family camping trip.

 tent

You can’t go camping without the perfect tent. For a small family, I love this Carbon River 3 Person Tent from Eddie Bauer. It fits 3 (including large adults) comfortably, with room to spare for gear and supplies. “55 inch height makes for more room when moving about the tent, and it comes with a full rain fly and two vestibules for lots of weather protection, but is still easy to get in and out of the openings.

Color-coded poles make this oversized tent easy to pitch and easy to see and put together even when it’s getting dark and you might be getting tired. Bright yellow stakes keep the tent planted in the ground and easy to see (no one needs to be tripping over stakes when you get out to use the bathroom or stubbing toes on them).

 3 man tent

Sleeping bags would be the next necessity on a camping trip. For the taller camper, or one who desires extra room, check out the Snowline. An honest to goodness 3-season performer (this saving you money and room having to buy multiples), this bag comes in regular size or a long option. Goose Down insulation covered by a ripstop nylon shell, this mummy style bag is tough and will keep you warm on cool nights without overheating on warmer ones. It comes with it’s own stuff sack and storage bag, and is machine washable (although I hung it to dry, and think you will want to as well). Weighing in at only 3 pounds, it’s easy to take along for those sites you need to hike to, or the glamping trips you still want to be comfortable on.

Oliver’s Labels – Back to School

School time is nearly here, and everyone is bringing in new lunchboxes and backpacks.  This can lead to a very difficult daily task, no not getting the kids out of bed (though that is indeed daunting!)  The most difficult daily activity for children of all ages (and some adults) is to come home with everything they came with, everyday.

labels

Lunchboxes, drink containers, backpacks, sneakers, gym clothes, underwear.  That is a lot of stuff to remember, but most importantly they have to remember to do their best and try to make some friends along the way.  So an easy way to help them remember their things is to label them.  That way, when something is left behind on a table or in a cubby, its easy to tell whose item it is.  Oliver’s Labels makes label for this purpose and many more.  The labels will stick to fabric, be water proof, hang on a tag or just survive a dish washer, Oliver’s has lots of options and all of them are useful.

Agritourism in the Catskills @I_LOVE_NY

When booking your next family holiday, perhaps you would like to try something a little different, more hands on, and that will bring you closer as a family while learning fun and useful things. Agritourism is growing in both popularity and availability- it is not only an educational experience, but a truly unique and interesting one that the whole family can enjoy.

Hull-o Farm

For many, farming was the way our ancestors made a living, and there are still quite a few Americans today who farm full time. Family farms, however, are fast going the way of horse drawn carriages and mechanical watches- it gets harder every year for small, family owned farms to make a living while large brand owned businesses are in the game and making regulations difficult. Enter agritourism. Not only does this allow family farms to stay afloat, but also gives today’s families and children who often have zero idea what manual and physical labor is, insight to the inner workings of farm life, days gone by, rural living, and a whole day being outside- without a video game in sight.

Hull-o Farm

We recently took such a trip to Hull-O Farms in the Catskills of upstate NY. This is not a petting zoo- you can actually take part in farm chores. You will learn to milk a cow, feed the chickens, find the eggs from the coop, bottle feed baby goats, and more. Your family stays right on site on farm property, eating with the other guests in the large kitchen food prepared by Mrs. Hull herself (many recipes honed after being handed down for generations) and often grown on the farm. The family is the 6th generation of farmers who have lived on the property. Mr. Hull (AKA “Farmer Frank”) [Read more…]

How Often Should You Disinfect Your Children’s Toys?

As a parent, your top priority is seeing to the health and safety needs of your children. But for some reason, your tiny tots seem intent on getting themselves into all kinds of harmful situations, what with climbing the furniture and placing everything in reach in their mouths. And when it comes to their toys, you are understandably concerned about the level of contamination that can occur. Even if you keep your house spic and span, watching your kids drag their toys on the ground or drop their pacifiers and then put them back in their mouths can send a shiver down your spine. Who knows what kinds of germs just made their way into your child’s delicate system? You don’t have to be a germaphobe to want to keep your kids safe from the many contaminants in their environment. After all, you’re the one that has to stay up with them all night when they’re sick. So here are just a few guidelines when it comes to the frequency of disinfecting your children’s toys.

disinfect kids toys

Let’s just start with the fact that there are two main types of toys: those that are plush and those that are made from harder substances (plastic, wood, etc.). And while you are probably aware that there are different ways to clean and sanitize these types [Read more…]

Choosing the Right School for Your Kids When You Relocate

Moving to a new city can be something of an adventure for the whole family, what with the prospects of meeting people and discovering fun, new places and activities in the local environs. But as adults are well aware, this period of upheaval can also be extremely trying for children, who tend to thrive on stability and routine. Even young kids have already become familiar with their home, their school, and other often-visited locations. They know the doctor and the dentist, their teachers, and other adults in your support network, and they’ve established a peer group. For older kids it can be even harder since they’ve likely been going to school with the same group of kids for years. Leaving all that behind for the unknown can be a shock to the system, no matter how great you make it sound. But you can help them to transition to their new living situation by taking pains to select a school where they’re going to find acceptance and success. And here are a few things you’ll want to consider in the process.

Chances are you will find yourself in a certain district when you move, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to confine yourself to this small geographic area when it comes to choosing the best schools for your kids. Often there are ways to get your children placement within other districts. For one thing, you might want to do something of an exploratory foray into local schools before you settle on a house. Some school districts are bound to be more desirable than others based on academics, class sizes, extracurricular activities (sports, art programs, etc.), feeder programs (which schools they feed into), and other factors, so you need to do your homework before you settle on your new living accommodations. It could save you from a lot of headaches when it comes to getting kids into the choice schools in your new city.

5 Tips for Keeping Your Toddler Healthy and Active

Parenting is a vast and varied subject, and many experts have difficulty coming to agreements about what is best for toddlers. One thing, however, is universally accepted; toddlers need to stay healthy and active in order to develop positive habits later in life. Health is a major concern for everyone in our world today. Follow these tips to kick the couch potato lifestyle and keep your toddler active to encourage a healthy lifestyle.

keep kids moving

  1. Limit TV Time
While the TV is a great parenting tool for entertaining and educating children, it is a double-edged sword. Toddlers can learn many great things from TV, but an overload of this kind of stimulation leads to lazy habits, low attention span and a sedentary lifestyle. Help your toddler get off to a good start in life by limiting their amount of TV time every day. Push educational programming and restrict the amount of mindless entertainment they get from the TV screen.
  2. Join in the Fun
As a parent, it is important that you take an active role in your toddler’s healthy physical activities. Become more than just a spectator, and join in the fun whenever possible. Help your toddler develop a strong body and acute coordination skills by engaging in fun, age-appropriate [Read more…]
