I recently got the chance to read a fabulous children’s book- God Gave Us the World, written by Lisa T. Bergren and illustrated by Laura J. Bryant.
Weather or not you are a deeply religious person, I think you will love this book. Why? Because I think this book is fantastic for everyone who has a child, and wants their child to grow up tolerant and loving towards others. You don’t have to even be a certain religion for this book- it just speaks about “God”.
This book is extremely well written, has a great flow, and lovely illustrations. It is all about a little polar bear who doesn’t understand why there are other types of bears in the world, why they live in other places, look different, and eat different foods. (Sound familiar?) The loving and thoughtful mother polar bear explains that God made the world, and made all the creatures in in. That we all love our homes and foods the best, because it’s what we know. There are some very wise and well written responses to some not-so-easy questions. I loved this book, I love the premise. It’s just so lovely! The fact that the Little Cub is questioning the colors and food choices of other bears is really interesting, and is helpful to let kids draw a parallel to humans. Should we all look alike, or are we beautiful because we are different? If we all looked the same and ate the same and lived in the same places and houses- would that be as much fun? Would it be as interesting?
It is told to be understood from a child’s viewpoint, and is so loving and gentle in it’s manner- it makes the kids sit and listen, they can all understand and relate it to their own lives. My kids and my Pre-K class were quiet for this book, they were very interested and wanted to hear what came next.
“Little Cub’s trip to a special museum exhibit, “Bears Around the World,” sparks a flurry of questions from the young polar bear who is just beginning to learn about life beyond her North Pole home.
“Every bear has a special place in God’s great, big world.”
This adorable story offers young children who are discovering their place in God’s big world an opportunity to learn about the wonder of diversity, the gift of creativity, the importance of caring for His gifts, and how each child-each creation-is special to God. “

We had some really great discussions after reading this book. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone who has a child or grandchild, niece or nephew, any child in their life that you would like to pass on a message of love to.
This book was peaceful, quiet, thoughtful, and reflective. I really enjoyed reading it with the kids.
There are other books by this author in the same sort of theme- I am planning on checking them out. If they are anywhere near as good as this one, I will be adding them to our library.
