I’m frustrated. Today, again (AGAIN) one of our kids was given a snack she can’t have due to allergies. A well meaning mother gave it to her, even though we kept taking it away. For parties- sometimes the mom’s can’t help themselves from giving the snacks to all the kids, even when we remind them that a child can’t have a certain snack. I eventually sat down next to her to prevent her from getting this snack.
This has happened more then once.
The scary thing? I was not with my regular teaching group today- and no one but me knew about her allergy. Of course, I kept reminding everyone. But it is always easier when all the teachers are familiar with your child’s issues.

Parents- consider getting a label for your child’s lunchbox, backpack- whatever. EVERYTHING. You know I’m a label freak- but not just for sanity’s sake, this time- Mabel’s Labels has Allergy Alert labels. Your child’s name and what they are allergic to. Mabel’s Labels are my personal favorites- but I really don’t care what you use. If your child has a severe allergy and goes to school- PLEASE get an allergy label. Your child- even if you think they are responsible- will eat the delicious snack because it looks good. A teacher will turn their head, and a class mom will pass little Johnnie that cookie that will make him sick. We are all really careful- But when stuff like today happens- I can get frustrated, and a little thing like a label can really make a difference in letting others know about your sweetie’s allergy. I don’t want to see a kid get sick, that’s all.
Sorry for my little rant!

  1. Thankfully we don’t have the allergies at home but dottie’s classmate does and her Mom is always running around speaking to everybody about “NUTS” and you are so right about getting does allergy alert labels. I understand you even get allergy alert wristbands too!

  2. You make a wonderful point…and one that needs to be broadcast far and wide. I think the label idea is GREAT! And, there are so many children allergic to one thing or another, no one should feel singled out. I think I will do a post on this subject also. 🙂

  3. I don’t blame you and in my grand children classes if some one is allergic to something no one gets to eat it.
    That is really scary
