Puss in Boots is the newest Shrek based film by Dreamworks. As with most current movies there is a game tie in. This tie in was developed by THQ for the Xbox 360 Kinect. The Kinect is a very cool piece of hardware which reads where you are and as the commercials say, ‘you are the controller’. It’s really neat and there is alot of potential. Puss in Boots introduces us to some of this potential in a kid friendly game about the swashbuckling feline Puss in Boots. This has some good moments and some tedious moments but overall is quite good. One must keep in mind this is a movie tie in and classically they are not of the highest quality, but Puss in Boots breaks this mold with a fun Kinect game. The meat and potatoes of the game are Adventure and Challenge. Adventure is the story of the game while Challenge is made up of various 1-2 player mini games involving game mechanics learned in the game. Challenge is unlocked throughout the game and is best played after the Adventure mode is beaten.
Adventure mode is very fun it follows Puss in his various adventures including sword fighting, sneaking, dancing, and playing guitar. All of which are controlled by intuitive easy body movements. An example is sword fighting is started by first gesturing as if pull out a sword then swinging up and down to swing your sword up and down or swinging left and right, you guessed it, swings your sword left and right. Before each new game mode there are detailed instructions which show the player exactly how to perform them. The only downside is some of the non-sword fighting portions get a bit long, the sneaking drags on a bit and while fun at first doesn’t grow in difficulty as much as one would hope, this is true of quite a few of Adventure missions. But one could also see this as a good thing, little ones will not get aggravated and give up quickly, instead they will see it through to the end.
The Challenge mode is quite fun as well, I really liked the “Shape It Up” mini game where the player has to make the same shape as the various objects as they do in sneak mode during the Adventure mode. Makes for some very interesting sights when playing with a room of friends. Little Man liked the Challenge mode best, it is easy to jump from activity to activity. He is a bit young for the game but I like to include him in game time when it is appropriate, and he loves it too. Lots of giggles out off both kids and adults. If you have a little Shrek fan, or a big Shrek fan you owe it to them to give this game a shot. Of if you are looking for a Kinect game with a sword fighting cat this is perfect. 🙂
I just bought my kids the Xbox360 with Kinect, I’m putting this on the Christmas list!
We have Puss In Boots game for the Wii. My son LOVES it he calls it “Kitty Cat Shoes” lol I admit I played it too. The sword fighting is so cool.

How cute! I’m going to have to check this one out!!
I haven’t seen the movie, but I have a Kinect! My daughters love it. I haven’t got much into Kinect mode lately because I swear it will put me into labor, but this game might be one my 7 year old might like. Thanks for sharing. I am going to start doing some game reviews soon, too!
I don’t have a Kinect but I did see the movie Puss in Boots! It was so cute. We saw it in 3D! It was so awesome as we haven’t been to a movie theater in several years!
