In recent news there has been some discussion about the Walgreens/Express Scripts dispute. The dispute was this: Express Scripts is a prescription drug middle man between medical insurance companies and the pharmacies which dispense medications. The issues was Express Scripts wanted complete control over the definition of the contract terms. These terms include the reimbursement rates, what is or is not a brand or generic drug and other factors. Walgreens refused and because of this Express Scripts is no longer working with Walgreens or Duane Reede. This is a huge problem for those who use Walgreens for prescription drugs because this means those individuals have to find a different pharmacy which could be further away or even just go to a different pharmacy that just doesn’t know them as well as their previous pharmacy. Walgreens feels this is very unfair especially to its customers so to help them out they have reduced the price of the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club . This club’s price will be reduced to $5 for an individual and $10 for a family. This membership is regularly $20 for an individual and $35 for a family. This is a significant savings and can help out with the cost of health care dramatically, especially since Walgreens offers deep discounts on 90 day supplies of many of their prescriptions. These 90 day supply discounts are suspected to be one of the biggest reasons for the tension with Express Scripts. Express also offers a discount 90 day supply club which would be a direct competitor with Walgreens.
