Taking the entire family out to the movies is an excellent bonding activity. But you may be concerned when you encounter the flood of movies to choose from, especially as summer blockbuster season draws nearer. What movies can possibly appease every family member’s particular tastes? As you glance at your calendar for the upcoming months, keep in mind these suggestions for the top family friendly films you’ll want to see. And don’t forget the popcorn!
Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax.Having recently hit theaters,The Loraxis a proven smash. Dr. Seuss is famous for his fanciful tales for children, usually involving whimsy, bizarre characters, clever rhyme schemes, and a subtle lesson included for readers to ponder. Starring Danny DeVito as the Lorax, Seuss’ beloved children’s book has been adapted for the big screen with its message about the importance of preserving the environment intact. Even if they don’t pick up on the film’s eco friendly message, your kids will love the 3-D animation offered through 3-D equipped theaters and media services (it’s also available to watch in good old fashioned – and less expensive – 2-D).
Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. The third installment of the popularMadagascarseries follows the wacky adventures of Alex the Lion (Ben Stiller) and his pals Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer), Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith), and Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock) as they try to make their way back home to New York. And don’t forget those crazy penguins!
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days.Incredibly popular with elementary school kids, this film is based on the third and fourth books in theWimpy Kidseries by Jeff Kinney. Long suffering middle school student Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) discovers that school is fraught with obstacles and daily conflict that he records in his diary. But school is out for the summer, and he has three months to fill with adventures. But what will happen when all Greg’s plans go comically wrong?
The Hobbit. The long anticipated prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy will no doubt excite your middle and high school aged children. Based on the fantasy sequence of novels by J.R.R. Tolkien, this adventure focuses on hobbit Bilbo Baggins as he embarks on a journey that brings him into conflict with monstrous spiders, ferocious dragons, and the uber-creepy Gollum who possesses one very dangerous piece of jewelry.
Dorothy of Oz.You’ve probably watched the original 1939 Wizard of Oz with your kids at least a few hundred times. Now you can all enjoy the continued adventures of Dorothy, based on a book by a descendent of originalOzauthor, L. Frank Baum. If your kids are fans of Glee, they may turn to out to watch Lea Michelle as she steps into the ruby slippers of this newest incarnation of Dorothy. Also along for the ride is Kelsey Grammer as the Tin Man, James Belushi as the Lion, and Dan Akroyd as the Scarecrow. No wicked witch this time – sorry, fans ofWicked– but the famous foursome does square off against a devilish jester who seeks to turn the people of Oz into puppets.
Sadly, my teen boys won’t see a movie with me anymore. Especially rated G. But when these all come out on video, I’ll be buying them for my home daycare library. LOL
