CafeWell is one of the newest social networks. The premise of this site is different then most others- health. Instead of promoting itself and getting it’s users to spend more time on their network, users not only build upon their already robust personal networks, but also build up themselves. Anyone is able to join, and it is free to join as well. Through advice, tips, and motivation from Olympic athletes as well as diet and nutrition experts, users have a large support team. There is also a program called Reach for the Peaks, which uses a wireless pedometer to help members keep active. In doing so, users receive regular prizes as well as social acknowledgement.

Now, as with all new things, there is some nervousness about this new site. The biggest worry is that they partner with health insurance companies. These partners could very well use all your personal data and either increase or decrease your premiums depending on your participation. However, this is not the reason for this site. You see, insurance companies actually make more when its members are healthy, and they don’t need to pay your bills. Using this frame of thought, the program in anonymous, and it’s users are not tracked or associated with any health insurance program. This program could be incredibly useful when intertwined with healthy eating and regular exercise. This site can make that all important first and beginning step a bit easier and more fun. Check out this testimonial from a member, who says “I’m absolutely thrilled with this motivating program.”.

I have been using the Cafe Well pedometer since last October. I have walked 178 miles so far. The program is addicting and I am definitely moving more than before the pedometer. Our pedometers were free. The program is sponsored by Health America. It is a really really great program.

  2. Looks like a great way to keep on track – I agree with you though, that having your personal information on too many sites might be detrimental… especially those that aren’t explicit about what they will do with your data
