As a single mother, work is never “done.” For that reason, there has to be more flexibility than you normally find in traditional colleges and universities. Without online programs, these schools simply make life difficult for a mother trying to earn a degree. Even if you do have evening and night classes, it’s a lot to expect of someone who has multiple obligations, works at a job already and has to take care of the house, even while away from it. Online colleges provide a flexible, motivational way to get an education without the rest of the hassle. Mothers can simply focus on studying and turning in assignments that they need to in order to get the grade. Getting a degree from home offers other benefits as well. For one, you can get a better job.

If you have children already, then you understand the type of strength it takes to work a full day and take care of everything. It’s also the way that tons of mothers get stuck in a routine, unable to get out of their current jobs because they lack the proper qualifications. Education is the one way that mothers can get ahead, not only for themselves but for the families that they support. It really isn’t so different working from home on a degree. More than ever, universities are offering online courses and even entire degree programs that are taught solely online. With the use of amazing new Internet technology, it’s actually more integrated and intelligent than many think. There are still lectures, discussions, and readings hosted online. You can even talk face-to-face with your professors thanks to webcams and sleek interfaces that integrate video.

You can find a variety of available online degree programs. There are so many different topics, related to anything that interests you. New degree programs are being developed for online integration every semester. There is a ton of research on reliable online degree programs through YourDegree.com. You can look at programs for business administration, healthcare, engineering, computer science or education. If you already work in any of these fields, then you are ahead of the game and can actually finish your degree sooner than you think with an online program.

Mothers often worry about college admissions and paying for school. It’s actually really simple. If you haven’t gotten a degree before, you could probably qualify for a Pell Grant or other financial aid through federal programs. You can also find scholarships specifically for women and single mothers. College admissions are tough but with the right essay, you can really show your desire for an education and how much that would change your life. Working from home is the next step. Once you find the right online university, you open up a new world of degree opportunities and bring yourself closer to transitioning into a better career with more benefits and higher pay.

  1. It’s not just single moms, but I really do think they rock for doing that. It’s not easy, won’t ever be. So rock it ladies!
I’m hoping once all my kids are in school I can go back to college. 🙂

  2. I’m one of those single moms. Summer sign up is on the 19th and I can’t wait! I’m terrified though – that I won’t be able to work 2 jobs and take care of my girls.

  3. going back to school is worth the effort

  4. Single moms aren’t the only ones that go back to school or have these worries. I think being a mom in general brings us to the same table. I’m not on my third degree as a back to schooler, I started when I was a single mother and it’s not any easier being married. If anything it’s more work. Now I don’t qualify for financial assistance that I don’t have to pay back. Had I known (financially)then what I know now I would have gone back much sooner. Great advice.
