When you visit most of the beach destinations on holiday these days, scuba diving is now one of the
regular offerings. With the maturing of the dive industry, you can find a range of diving activities
and courses that now start from as young as 8. This truly can be a holiday activity that can be
enjoyed by the whole family.
However, the majority of scuba experiences will only give you a feel of the underwater instead of an
undersea feel. Basically, the main difference is that the natural wonders below the ocean’s surface
give you a chance to explore a diverse marine environment; sunken ships, and coral reefs to enhance
your dive holiday experience. It isn‘t just about getting wet, or learning to use the equipment –
there is so much more to scuba diving!
Croatia and The Adriatic Sea, is a destination that allows you to experience more than just an
underwater environment, it really will take you on an adventure. Over the years, I have checked out
several places to dive, as well as diving centers’ in nearly eight different countries and Croatia is a
recognized destination that offers something unique.
First of all, you have to complete a scuba diving course; normally this would be the PADI Open Water
Course. It is advisable to take this in Croatia, as part of your diving activities, or alternatively you can
complete this before you arrive. Either way, if you want to go on and dive in Croatia, you must apply
and purchase a ‘divers’ card’, to be able to scuba dive in Croatia. This normally costs 100 Kuna or
Euros equivalent.
There are five different places to dive in Croatia which I would strongly recommend, where the clear
blue seas give excellent conditions for a great dive holiday:
1) Elafity Island is a wonderful dive site and the cave that you can swim into is a great attraction.
This cave also appears to be a breeding area for fish, so you will find a lot various types in this area.
I would recommend this dive spot for more experienced divers, because the constant waves will
make for a difficult entry and exit to and from the cave.
2) Kornati Island offers about the clearest water that you’ll find at these diving spots and is ideal
for beginners. The underwater scenery consists mainly of sponges and corals, which are spread out
consistently over uneven and continuous layers of rocks.
3) The Istrian Peninsula also boasts a sunken ship. It is the wreck of a passenger ferry that went
down in 1914. This ship is still in great shape after so many years and therefore makes for a really
interesting scuba dive.
4) Cres Island is known for many of the remnants of huge cargo ships that are still in one piece,
these are great to swim through on a dive. However, swimming through wrecks on a dive, should
only be done if you are guided through by your underwater dive guide, or you are of a sufficiently
experienced level to be able to handle this sort of challenge
5) The final diving spot is Dubrovnik, which is an area I would recommend exclusively for
professional divers. This location also has a sunken cargo ship; however it is in an area that can
experience very strong underwater currents. When you’re diving in this area, the currents will
make it hard for you to move around so you might feel a continuous push and pull, this can be a
disconcerting experience for new or inexperienced divers.
Bear in mind that these are only some of the top spots for your dive holiday in Croatia. There are indeed many dive centers and places to dive
in Croatia. If you are thinking about taking a holiday and diving is an activity that you have thought
about trying out, then Croatia is a place that I am sure you will not be disappointed by. Croatia is a
great dive holiday destination if you want to experience true undersea adventures.

I’ve never been scuba diving, an amazing experience, I’m sure, I would love to do it someday.
@About A Mom, a great place to learn to scuba dive is in a local pool. The water is clear and you’re usually only about 10 feet down at most. Most dive courses begin at the pool and then only move to the open water (lake or ocean) to complete the training. Take as many trips to the pool as you need until you feel comfortable with the gear, and breathing under water, as scuba diving is a great way to explore the wonders under the water.
I have never been scuba diving but it’s definitely something I want to try some day (even though I don’t particularly like being under water, lol).
I’ve never scuba dived but I use to do the data entry for a scuba organization. I’m not a big water person but I do think it would be lovely to try it once and see the coral and fish life.
Never tried Scuba diving, I enjoy snorkeling though
I miss the water…scuba diving is the bomb! It’s been too long!
I love roller coasters and would probably even go skydiving, but scuba diving scares the dickens out of me. Still sounds like a great place to visit!
