Guess who finally has their basement back in some form of usage? We do! Any of you who have been reading Have Sippy for any length of time know that we were severely flooded in Hurricane Irene, and only 2 months ago did we get any insurance money at all. We did all the tear down ourselves. Now it is finally time for our house to stop looking like a hot mess and be a home again.
In this arduous process, we had to ask ourselves some difficult questions. Most of which involved, “What do we do with the basement now?” It had been the largest part of the house- playroom, office, bathroom, laundry room, and my closet (since I don’t have one in the bedroom). It was a major loss.
We could either make believe this whole hurricane and massive amount of flooding didn’t happen, or we could try again, this time smarter and with the experience of a horrific flood to teach us what to to. Yes it was a fluke- so they say- but still- that was something I never want to deal with again.
The hot water heater is now piped in such a way that it is a bit easier to remove in a pinch, toys will be kept in big plastic bins that are water tight and have comfortable handles. What about the living area, the play room, the office? How are we going to make these areas still feel like ours, while making the area still feel like home?
How about some funky patterned, comfy carpet. But would wall to wall carpeting really be a good idea when a flood is still fresh in our memory? No way. Area rugs all the way. We got this gorgeous funky area rug from Mohawk rugs. The rug has a great 60’s vibe to it and is huge! So you can’t even tell its an area rug. The pattern is great, it’s really fun. Our dog had a field day when we first put it down. She was rolling around and stretching out as if this was the world’s biggest comfiest dog bed. The kids did just about the same thing, except they were able to vocalize how fluffy the rug is. Did I mention I have odd kids? Well….
