How Being a Mom is Like Being a Nurse
If you are considering either a job in the medical field or having children you may be surprised how similar they can be. If you plan on doing both then I tip my hat to you and wish you the best of luck.
Things get messy
We all know why nurses where scrubs. Hospitals are messy places and sick people tend to make it even messier. The reason that a nurse wears scrubs is because they are cheap, disposable and easily removed if something really nasty gets spilled on them. I actually suggest getting scrubs for around the house when you have a new baby. Everything that comes out of a baby will end up on you so why not be prepared with clothing you don’t care about?
Know your illnesses
Children are bubbling piles of illness. They get sick all the time and the best thing you can do to keep yourself from freaking out every time is to know different symptoms. Each sneeze shouldn’t land you in the ER. You are going to learn more about different sickness than you ever thought. Just stay of WebMD.
Boost your immune system
Children may be crocks of sick but they love to share. As a nurse you spend your days around people who are coughing and exuding illness. You need to make sure that you are well hydrated and that your immune system is in tip top condition if you are either a nurse or a mother. You will get sick but you may as well be prepared for it. Keeping your vitamin intake up and staying hydrated will help you recover faster and get back to taking care of other sick people.
Wear sensible shoes
Heels are a thing of the past. Get a pair of shoes that have good grip and you don’t mind spending all day in. Whether you are racing to an ICU to intubate or chasing your kid across a playground, you are going to want something you can run in. These and solid scrub tops may not be fashionable but you get over it.
