With three kids that have gone through various stages of Lego engineering, we have quite a comprehensive collection. The boys don’t get into them all that often but Ms. Ma’am still drags the bins out and considering all the nieces and nephews that filter through my house they still get some good use.
My nephew, aka Gare-Bear, especially has an adoration for the building mechanisms. I’m fascinated with his tower building abilities. I don’t exaggerate when I tell you that he builds mini villages, jail houses, spaceships, watch towers, cruise ships, and a plethora of realistic structures….the kid truly has a special ability and will build for hours on end. At 7 years old…that’s awe like.
So when I saw the set-up of the Laser Pegs building kit, I knew I had found Gare-Bear’s Christmas present. Laser Pegs have a series of clear plastic peg pieces; each encompasses an LED, making it illuminate. Since the pegs are clear, the circuit board is visible, which makes for an added high tech interior.
The pieces are marked with indicators of LED color, which is help for color coordinated designs. A single piece connects to a power source, which enables for the illumination of all those pieces that are connected. There are ten basic shapes to choose from, ranging from a simple straight peg to hub pieces that can have multiple connections though most of the pegs are even pipe shaped.
The Kit-470 that I tested before deciding that this was what we would do for Gare-bear, was a very simple 6-in-1 design that included a battery-powered base. An AC adapter is available, I think because of the battery drain factor we will probably pick one up when we got back for Gare-bears’s set. Plus, because of his unique talent, I’ll probably get him one of the larger more complex designs, I imagine they use up even more battery life.
Of all his vast collection of connecting structure mechanisms I know he didn’t have one that lights up. Well because he’ll be able to connect them to his Laser Pegs they’ll all light up 🙂
