Guest Giveaway ~

I recently posed a question to my readers on my Facebook page asking people how they felt about making charitable contributions in someone’s name verses traditional gift giving.

I learned a great deal from the conversation that followed…for one, y’all are some generous folks, and are making a difference for the greater good in some very clever and creative ways.

You shared some great ideas as to how we all might gift organizations that share in our desire to make societal transformations.

In light of our own recent needs here in the US, I would like to add more to that conversation and share about an organization that has had a hand in many areas of positive social change.
World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.

World Vision aids in meeting the immediate basic needs of nutrition, education, shelter, and clothing as well as water.

Every day more than 4,000 children die of water-and sanitation-related diseases. Giving to the CleanWater Fund will help bring clean water, sanitation, and hygiene to communities — helping cut child deaths by more than half!
They also have programs that intervene and end the cycle of abuses that come from the conditions of poverty such as human trafficking. An estimated 2 million children are enslaved and abused in the global commercial sex trade — most of them girls. Many children are sold into prostitution to pay off family debts or forcibly recruited from the street to work in brothels.
One piece of the World Vision pie is served to the female victims of human trafficking girls assistance like medical care, nutritious food, non-formal education, vocational training, compassionate counseling, and, where possible, reintegration into a loving family environment.
World Vision operates from the contributions of people like us. They have an amazing catalog filled with items that allow us to gift in two ways; 1) a meaningful and affordable gift for a loved one; 2) proceeds that make a difference in the lives of children and families living in poverty in the U.S. and around the world. With a financial contribution, the gift giver selects one of several items that can be given to someone on a holiday gift list and at the same time help a person in need.
There are several beautiful items to choose from, such as a Thai Bracelet and Necklace or holiday ornaments; each purchase is designated for a specific purpose in the World Vision causes. For example if you were to purchase the Artisan Beaded Necklace your dollars will be used to meet the needs of children and families.
Approximate size is 44″ around (22″ long when worn as a single necklace). Each is unique – size and color may vary slightly.
For the fourth consecutive year, World Vision staff will be traveling across the world this December to see the impact that goats, sheep and other gifts have on families and children in the “The True Spirit of Christmas Tour” and telling their stories on the World Vision Facebook page; stories of successes and how our dollars are making real change are inspiring and truly representative of the real Christmas story.

The stories are amazing and proof that, be it Christmas presents for children, toys, bibles or food sources, a purchase with World Vision really is a gift that keeps on giving.

In response to the destruction left by hurricane Sandy, World Vision will begin distributing relief items via local partners on Friday, November 2, in Queens and the Bronx boroughs of New York City, and on Saturday, November 3, in Yonkers
The relief supplies — which are being trucked in from World Vision’s domestic disaster headquarters in North Texas — will include basics like flood clean-up kits, blankets, tarpaulins, hygiene kits, food kits, and other essential items like warm clothes and shoes.
They will continue assessments in other areas of New York, Maryland, West Virginia, and Kentucky and anticipate that its relief and recovery operations in devastated communities will continue for up to three years and will need our support for those continuing efforts as well.
