Recently at an office near by had a bit of ‘forced renovation’. This forced renovation was courtesy of a very special lady known to most of the east coast by the name of Sandy. Sandy has been called many things, most of them not so nice, others hurricane, super-storm, and franken-storm. This creature ripped through state after state leaving floods, down trees and loss. Once small part of this loss was an office near the coast which was at the first floor of an office building. Sandy grabbed the ocean and pulled it along with her on her trek up the coast. Unfortunately, this ocean ended up in the streets. Streets and ocean do not get along very well, so the street pushed the ocean away to the buildings surrounding the street. Thus, 2 feet of water went into the office building. In doing so, it covered everything in the first floor of the building with a fine layer of water. The ocean water also brought its new friends- garbage and waste water. This water wrecked everything on the floor. Desks, chairs, filing cabinets, copy machines, even the odd safe was water logged. Everything was ruined- but the oddest thing which was ruined was definitely the safe. I always thought they were built to survive everything, even fire. But no such luck. I’m thinking its time for a new safe, one that bolts into a wall and is secure, fire proof and most importantly- flood proof. Maybe we can order custom safes for all the valuable paperwork in the office. Probably not, but it is a thought. Instead of wrapping the office in safes, there is sweeping renovation and a new push for, ‘no hard copies’. Everything is to be scanned then recycled Paperless means less paper to be ruined.
Now you may be asking what was in the safe? The answer: blueprints to the original building, old records and a ton of old paperwork that would have been perfect for the 150 year anniversary upcoming. Ah well, this is the reason why old paperwork is so interesting, because it has survived quite a bit. This particular paperwork did not. Cest la vie.
I have a safe and don’t use it. Thanks for the reminder
GREAT idea, thanks for this post!! So sorry you had to deal with Sandy. Hope things are looking up since then.
I had always “assumed” saves were water proof too! If their fire proof, how can they not be water proof? I am so sorry to hear of all the lose you endured from Sandy. 🙁
I’m sorry to hear about everything that got ruined. A safe is something I have never really thought about but it is definitely something to be considered. Thanks so much for sharing!
That is awful, I’m so sorry to hear that. Like you, it would not occur to me that things in a safe would be ruined too.
A safe is on our list of things that we need to buy!
I am always sad when I think of historical things like this getting ruined! We need a safe here for sure!
