Tonight we will start with a bit of a cool parent lesson. There are three rules to being a cool parent.
Rule 1) Parents are never cool
Rule 2) Do not try to be cool
Rule 3) Parents are never cool
Now that we have gotten that out of the way, if you do want to impress your kids with your ‘coolness’, make them feel ‘cool’ instead of trying to show off your own self. That never works, does it? Hm. Instead of trying to act young and hip, get them fun gifts for the holidays that the kids would enjoy (and maybe was something you always wanted to try). Check out the new line of skateboards by Shaun White. These boards are made tough to last, and with all kinds of great designs to truly impress as well. Also there is an entire line of protectives, pads and helmets, to keep all those ‘cool’ bones from breaking. Not that your kids will ever fall of course (ha!), but just to be a good example to the younger kids. 😉 I like that these boards are safety tested by Shaun White himself and meet rigorous standards. I wonder if his kids will think he is cool? Hmmm….
Onward! Some of the positive attributes of skate boarding, other then looking super-neat-o (that’s the hot lingo of the day, right?) while pulling off tricks are: Skateboarding teaches focus. Concentration and planning is one of the key components to pulling off tricks. The other components are determination and focus. Each of these are great attributes to build in your kids. With these three ideals in mind all tasks can be tackled.
Some of the negative attributes of skating are that it can get painful. Falling stinks, but that is what pads are for. Some people just aren’t meant to use a skateboard (cough)- balance is a key component to skate boarding and without it, there is very little a rider can do. But the flip side of this is maybe skating can help build up a better sense of balance too.
Of course, the decision to give a skate board no matter what the reason is one which should be given with pads and a helmet. Be safe.
I think my 4 year old would really like to have one of these. He has a skateboard, but this one is cooler!
I should never have opened this post with my 5 year old who’s dying for a skateboard! Mom that’s SO COOL! I want one!!
Don’t laugh but I can’t even ride a bicycle so trying to even go near a skateboard would be out of the question!
I tried to skateboard….once. I won’t be repeating that mistake again!
