Everybody needs a break. You work hard all year round and when vacation season hits you want to
be able to hit the road or hop on a plane to old favorite destinations or new locales. However, those
of you with large families may be wondering how you can transport everyone safely and comfortably.
Consider these 5 great transportation solutions for large family vacations.

  1. Rent a Larger Vehicle. If you’re like most families, your car probably isn’t the ideal vehicle for taking the whole clan on a vacation. You may have enough seating for everyone, but the extra space taken up by luggage can make things uncomfortably tight if you don’t have enough room for the cargo. Renting a larger vehicle such as a large minivan or SUV can be a good option. Some of these vehicles seat up to 14, giving you plenty of room for passengers and bags alike.
  2. Purchase an RV. If you plan on making lots of vacation trips with your family, you might want to consider purchasing an RV. These are great for everything from road trips to camping expeditions for large families, and could pay for themselves quicker than expected when you consider the cost of rentals. Having your own RV lets you take the whole family out for a vacation any time with less planning needed. The convenience might just be worth it for you.
  3. Look for Group Deals on Airfare. Flying to your next vacation destination is also an option for large families. Airlines are more flexible than you might think. In the struggle to fill empty seats on their flights, many airlines offer discounts on tickets. Inquire about group discounts. If you book several seats on the same flight, you may be able to get a better price on each individual ticket than you would if they’d been bought separately. Try to plan flights for the slower weekdays–the best prices on airfare are typically for Tuesday flights.
  4. Hire a Driver. For vacations on the road when you don’t want to be stressed out by the responsibility of driving the family around all the time, consider hiring a professional. You could enlist the services of a Chicago limo service if they’ll suit your needs, or take a lesson from your school days and charter a bus. Your driver can shuttle the family around in a roomy vehicle and give you time to relax and enjoy your vacation.
  5. Travel Separately. When all else fails, don’t resign yourself to giving up on the family vacation. If you’re driving to your destination, take two cars and split the family into groups for the ride. You can switch places at rest stops to keep the group dynamic fresh and interesting on the road. Just make sure both cars have a safe driver behind the wheel and either copies of directions or navigation systems. If you’re flying to your vacation, your groups could take separate flights and either meet at the airport or the hotel at your destination.

  1. We recently went on a holiday with my parents as well as our children in New Zealand. We hired a minibus and had a great time!! We also split up later in the journey and had a bit of separate time.

  2. When we take a vacation with family we usually travel on our own and meet at the location. That way we all have flexibility to do what we want while there. But we can still enjoy being together. Love the idea of doing the rv though. I think that would be a fun way to travel west!
