The holiday season does happen to be about the busiest time of the year. It’s when we tend to go to business parties, children’s pageants and church events. In other words, this is the time of year when moms are more visible than ever. So, even in the midst of all of the cooking, decorating and shopping, you definitely have to make yourself and your appearance a top priority.

You may not think that it’s a “big deal”, but it is. Look at it as your own Christmas present to yourself: making the time and putting in the effort to look absolutely breathtaking from Christmas to New Year’s.

Get a facial. It would be fabulous if you could go to a spa to have a professional facial done (including getting your eyebrows threaded or waxed), but if money is tight, there are plenty of websites that can provide you with homemade facial recipes that will both exfoliate and soften the skin. Just go to your favorite search engine and put “homemade facial recipes” into the search engine.

Do your nails. You’re going to be doing a lot of hand shaking and champagne (or sparkling cider) toasting. This means that your nails need to be in tip-top condition. Again, a professional mani-pedi would be ideal, but if not, call over a girlfriend and do each other’s nails. Oh, and don’t go with a clear coat. Pick a color that pops. Some trends for this winter are deep reds, neutral metallic and polishes that sparkle.

Try a new do. Sometimes, we’re so busy putting our hair into a ponytail or pushing it back into a headband that we don’t even make the time to look at what’s hot when it comes to hairstyles. There are some looks that you can’t leave this year without trying including the nape of the neck ballet bun, the center part (with cascading curls or a flat iron look), a braided halo and French twists (which is one twist on each side of your hair rather than a braid). If you must do a ponytail, try a low one with a bit of a bouffant up top. Oh, and if you’re looking for some new hairstyling tools, you can find some great flat iron reviews on beauty supply websites like SallyBeauty.com or discounts for supplies at RetailMeNot.com.

Use some natural remedies. Your sleeping hours are probably going to be a bit unpredictable over the holidays, so make sure to place some cold cotton balls over your eyes for about 10 minutes each morning. If your face appears a bit puffy due to too many cocktails or salty foods, you can dilute the salt in your system by drinking more water and peppermint tea is a great aid for digestion.
If your face is a bit flushed from all of the cooking in the kitchen, chewing on some ice cubes can quickly lower your body temperature and if red wine has stained your lips, a toothbrush with a bit of brown sugar on it is a tasty way to exfoliate the dead skin.

Get a new shade. Whether you like playing “dress up” or being low-key is more your style, make it a point to pick up a trendy shade of eye shadow or lipstick. A shimmering bronze or a deep plum may be all that you need for a beautifully dramatic effect that will take you from “day mom” to “elegant woman”.
