healthy foods on a budget

Feeding a family can be expensive. Moreover, making sure that your family is making healthy eating habits can be even more expensive. And you don’t want to keep going out to dinner, because that can quickly add up. So the question becomes: how do you plan healthy family meals with out breaking the bank? Well, it is easier than you think. There are a lot of ways that you plan mealtime with a number of healthier options by following a few of the following steps. Any family, with enough creativity and a penny-pinching mindset, can plan healthy family meals on a tight budget.

  1. One of the best ways to save big on family meals is to purchase in bulk. There are a number of ways that you can purchase fresh fruits and fresh vegetables directly from farms that cost drastically less than supermarkets. Usually, if you have a large family, buying a few pounds here and there of vegetables and fruit can start to add up. Buy from farms and your family can eat healthier without spending a fortune at the super market.
  2. There are also a number of ways to organize clean eating meal plans by not spending a fortune on vegetables. Consumer statistics show that people are spending way too much money on vegetables when they don’t have to. In addition, most people don’t even realize that they are over spending. One great way to curb this habit is to purchase vegetables only when they are in season.
  3. Families can also grow their own food, in their own back yard. The yearly savings from growing your own food can be enormous. When you have to continually run to the market for produce, you are not only spending way more than your have to on groceries, but you are also spending money on fuel getting there. Surely, there are more constructive ways to spend our time.
  4. Another way to plan healthy family meals on a tight budget is to preserve food. This can be by pickling, canning or jarring extra food that might go bad. Families can also save all their excess vegetable ends, onion shells and more to freeze to use later to make things like soup or broth. All of those odds and ends are rich in proteins and another nutrients, so throwing them away is a big waste.
  5. Lastly, if your family is on a tight budget, one of the best ways to save money is to not buy bottled soda or soft drinks. You can always make your soft drinks or soda drinks at home using the most minimal of ingredients. It might be tough to wean your kids from what they are used to, but consider this: families of 3 children or more can spend up $10,000 a year on bottled or canned drinks bought at supermarkets. If your family wants to eat healthy and save money, why not cut out grocery store bought drinks. You can always take the money you save and take your family on a vacation.
