Recently, my kiddo and I had the pleasure of being invited to Sandra Lee’s World’s Largest Bake Sale And by largest they weren’t kidding. This huge bake sale took place at the Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central Station in New York City. Upon arriving at Grand Central Station, visitors are greeted by one of the most grandiose buildings in public transportation history. This was the first time for Little Man and he was struck by awe with the gorgeous vaulting ceilings filled with constellations. An interesting tidbit of information is the constellations in the sky depicted are backwards. There are a few schools of thought as to why this is, the most popular are this is the view of God from about the constellations common of Medieval paintings, two is it was a mistake made by the artists who transposed the image.
The Bake Sale itself was run to benefit the No Kid Hungry campaign and the Food Bank for New York. Some of the stars involved in the bake sale were: Martha Stewart, Mario Batali, Emeril Lagasse, Bobby Flay, Guy Fieri, Dylan Lauren, Buddy Valastro, Wendy Williams, and Ty Pennington. If you couldn’t make the bake sale itself, you can still donate to this worthy cause through the No Kid Hungry action site. Celebrities and stars are fun to see in person, but the real main attraction is helping. Pitch in and help in any way you can. There are far too many children hungry in America.
According to No Kid Hungry:
Children who struggle with hunger are sick more often, recover more slowly, and are more likely to be hospitalized.
They are more likely to experience headaches, stomachaches, colds, ear infections and fatigue.
Children who face hunger are more susceptible to obesity and its harmful health consequences as children and as adults.
Lack of enough nutritious food impairs a child’s ability to concentrate and perform well in school.
Children who regularly do not get enough nutritious food to eat have significantly higher levels of behavioral, emotional and academic problems and be more aggressive and anxious.
The baked goods being sold at the bake sale were of the utmost quality, what else would you expect from Food Network, Sandra Lee, Cake Boss, and bakeries like Robicelli’s, Serendipity 3 and Insomniac Cookies? Of the available baked goods we had the pleasure of trying the Nutella Whoppie Pie which gets the Little Man seal of a chocolate mouth approval. We also tried the spinach cheese quiche which was melt in your mouth delicious.
