After a week-long voting contest on Facebook, Coney Island fans select Dreamland Plaza as the name for the brand new pedestrian plaza located at the southern end of West 12th Street, adjacent to the famous Riegelmann Boardwalk. The contest was posted last Monday on the popular ConeyIslandFun Facebook page (www.facebook.com/
“We were hoping to capture of piece of Coney Island’s rich history with the name of the plaza, and are very pleased with our fans name selection. The plaza is meant to be a public space for our visitors and residents to enjoy, so we couldn’t think of a more perfect way to select a name than by turning to our fans, for which the plaza is ultimately for. This plaza is part of the Alliance’s initiatives continue Coney Island’s transformation, and offer additional public spaces within the Coney Island amusement district”, said Johanna Zaki, Alliance for Coney Island, Director of Operations.
Dreamland Plaza was inaugurated last Monday in a ribbon-cutting ceremony which was attended by Alliance for Coney Island board members, Community Board 13 District Manager Chuck Riechenthal, and representatives from both the Borough President’s office and Councilmember Domenic M. Recchia’s office. Entertainment included a sword juggling act by Coney Island USA’s Ray Valenz.
The new Dreamland Plaza is part of a collaborative effort between the New York City Department of Transportation, local Community Board 13, and the Alliance for Coney Island. Fitted with tables and chairs, the plaza offers flexible seating options for area visitors and residents. Additionally, throughout the summer months, the plaza will offer programming space for community events and small shows.
The plaza is an initiative of the newly formed Alliance for Coney Island. The Alliance for Coney Island was formed in July 2012 by the stakeholders representing some of Coney Island’s most iconic attractions: the New York Aquarium, Luna Park, Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park, Nathan’s Famous, Gargiulo’s Restaurant, Astella Development Corporation, and the Brooklyn Cyclones. The Alliance focuses on sustaining Coney Island’s transformation into a year round seaside entertainment destination through programming and marketing initiatives, and platforms that support economic development and address quality of life issues.
