CONEY ISLAND’S 23RD ANNUAL SAND SCULPTING COMPETITION

Astella Development Corporation and Alliance for Coney Island present the 23rd Annual Sand Sculpting Competition & Unity Day Celebration, sponsored in part by National Grid in collaboration with New York Aquarium and Luna Park. Sixty mounds of sand on the Coney Island beach, prepared by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, will be transformed into artistic creations by professional and amateur sculptors during the annual Coney Island Sand Sculpting Contest and Unity Day Celebration. The family friendly event is free to attend, and features a complete event program with live entertainment, a DJ, plus contests and giveaways.

This event is hosted by Astella Development Corp. and the Alliance for Coney Island

“We look forward with excitement to collaborate with Alliance for Coney Island for this year’s Sand Sculpting Contest and Unity Day Celebration,” said Judi Orlando, Astella Development Corporation, Executive Director. “For over two decades, we’ve been amazed by the impressive sculptures and love to see families and friends joining together for this constructive and fun event.”

Registration to compete in the event for cash prizes is free of charge. The amateur sculptors, coming from Coney Island and beyond, will compete in five categories:

  • Individual Adult
  • Individual Child
  • Adult Group
  • Child Group
  • Mixed (Children and Adults)

First, second, and third place winners in each category will be awarded generous cash prizes—$400, $200, and $100 across each category. Artists and leaders from the Coney Island community will serve as judges, examining each sculpture and scoring each of the creations based on aesthetic appeal, creativity, and degree of difficulty.

Professional sand sculptors Chuck Feld and his team from Sound Pounders and Andy Gertler and Sue Beatrice from Sand Sculpt USA with their teams will start early in the morning to begin work on their spectacular sand castles which are sure to amaze participants and passersby alike.

Entertainers from Coney Island and beyond will rock the boardwalk all day long, including musicians, dancers, vocalists, and more. In addition, local organizations and businesses will provide informational materials, along with giveaways.
