Disclosure- I received a copy of this book in order to review it.  All opinions are my own and honest.

I loved this book- loved it.  “Anvil of God, Book One of the Carolingian Chronicles” was a real page turner, with well flushed out characters that you felt vested in.  I read this book in two sittings, only stopping because the plane landed.  It was full of historical fact with each character’s personal story woven in.  Although each story was full of historic detail, some parts were pure fiction, with details of lives and even some characters made up or enhanced for the dramatic purposes of the book (which was real and what or who was made up is explained in the book’s epilogue).  It was woven together beautifully, and made me want to read more about the real people this book was based on.  I highly recommend this book, and hope that the author continues the series.

What happens when the hammer falls?
New historical novel rides the storm that follows the death of Charles the Hammer

In the wake of his death, a dangerous mix of ambition, devotion and betrayal consumes the family of Charles the Hammer as they plot to seize the Merovingian throne.

A new piece of historical fiction by J. Boyce Gleason, “Anvil of God” chronicles the chaos that ensues when Charles the Hammer’s death puts his family’s plans to take the throne in jeopardy.

Sibling rivalry, a widow’s determination and changing allegiances force Charles’s children to navigate the roiling waters of a pending civil war. The result pits brother versus brother, Christianity against the pagans and forces his young daughter to choose between love and her family’s ambition.

“It is a story of a family in crisis,” Gleason said. “Only this family’s choices have consequences that resonate throughout a continent.  As individuals, they aren’t necessarily good or evil.  But, their choices can be.”

Anvil of God explores the real life costs of love, honor and ambition as Charles’s children pursue their personal destinies.

“Historians can tell you what happened in history,” Gleason said. “I like to explore why.  This book brings to life a crucial moment in history in a way that is entertaining and informative.”

  1. Becky Lyons Borgia says

Oooooh, sounds good!!! I like that it tells you up front who is historically accurate!

  2. This sounds like an interesting book. The thing that sticks out to me is the author saying that historians can you what happened, I want to figure out why. Great thought!
