Family vacations. They serve as a milestone of memories for so many of us. And when it comes to some of the top places to visit with our family members, without a doubt, Yellowstone National Park goes right up on the top of the list. Not only does it provide an absolutely amazing view and a great place to camp but it has a wide variety of things to do as well.

So, if this is sounding more and more like a place that you’d like to go with your family and you’d like a few planning tips, we’ve got five great ones to make your vacation one that you won’t forget.

Know when to go. Although you can enjoy Yellowstone no matter what time of year that you go, if you want to enjoy the area without having to deal with a lot of tourists, springtime is the most ideal. For one thing, there are not a lot of people then (like there is in the summertime), so you can have the space and privacy to enjoy quality time with your family. Plus, the weather is much milder too.

Know what to pack. You’re going to be doing a lot of walking while you’re there and so you want to be as comfortable as possible. Take jeans, running shoes, rain gear (especially in the spring) and a First-
Aid Kit, just for safe measure. Also, because we’re sure you’re going to see some truly amazing sites, don’t forget to pack a camera too.

Know about some of the sites to see. Although a part of the fun of a vacation is having a bit of spontaneity, it’s always a good idea to know about some of the popular things to do wherever it is that you plan to go. In the Yellowstone area, some of those places include Lamar Valley (where you can view the lifestyle of wolves), the Tower-Roosevelt area (where you can see plenty of bears, elks and moose) and the Mammoth Hot Springs, which serves as the headquarters for the park.

Know where to stay. In order for any vacation to be truly enjoyable, you have to select a comfortable place to stay. Luckily, Yellowstone has something for everyone. If you are looking for an upscale place
to rest your head inside of the park, Lake Hotel and Lodge will have just what you are looking for. If you would prefer more of a rustic cabin feel Roosevelt Lodge is nice. If you would like to stay outside
of the park, West Yellowstone is 45 minutes away and Jackson Hole is another favorite vacation spot.

It’s roughly two hours away from Yellowstone. Of course, you can always stay on one of the park’s many campgrounds. To make reservations there, visit Yellowstone National Park Lodges.

Know what your children can do. Here’s something that’s pretty awesome. Did you know that when you travel the Rockies that your kids can become a very special part of the Yellowstone experience?
That’s because there are two programs that are specifically geared to kids over the age of 5. One is known as “Junior Rangers” and another is “Young Scientist”. For more information on both of them, visit

NPS.gov and put “for kids” in the search field.
