Costumes come in many varieties.  Some have specific meanings others none what so ever.  There are four general categories of costumes.  They are theatrical, national, holiday/festival, children and mascots.

We will look at a few examples of each and a short description.

First p is theatrical.  These costumes are for showing of some kind, either in a play/musical, television, movie, etc.  These costumes are varied almost as much as a category could be.  Everything from historically accurate garb to space alien suits can fit in this category as long as they are for theatrical enjoyment.

Next up is national costumes.  These costumes emphasis the differences between a particular culture and others.  Examples are the traditional tunic for men from India.  Kimonos from Japan and the baseball hat from the United States.

Third are the holiday/festival costumes.  These include any costumes worn for a special event or time period.  Some examples of these types of costumes are Halloween costumes, Easter costumes, Christmas Purim and Mardi Gras.  All of which involve wearing a costume for a special occasion or day.  Halloween being one of the most recognized costume holiday world wide.

Childrens costumes are up next and instead of involving a certain time or place make up little one’s costumes.  These costumes are used as a play thing.  In the form of roleplay and exploration costumes like princesses, pirates, police officers are often used.

The final category is Mascots.  A Mascot is a representation of something else.  Usually a mascot is a physical representation of a particular group of people, often times a school, city, state or sports team.  An example is the knight for Rutgers, the Bear for Chicago.

There are many costumes which are available and the first step to finding the perfect one is asking yourself why?  The second is to look around.  I would suggest starting at Mr. Costumes or other costume websites and start comparing.
