Anza Borrego State Park Wildflowers
Each spring, a mere two-hour drive from downtown San Diego, the deserts of Anza Borrego are in bloom. The winter rains give the determined plant life of the desert just enough moisture to blossom, creating carpets, crops, and splashes of color in the unique landscape. The biggest blooms typically occur between February and April. Each year is different, so park volunteers recommend calling the Wildflower Hotline at (760) 767-4684 before making the drive.
Carlsbad Flower Fields
Another place to see spectacular spring blooms in San Diego is at the Carlsbad Flower Fields, open only from March 1 – May 11. Nearly 50 acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus cover the hills, creating an abundant, colorful display and ushering spring into San Diego County. Check the Flower Field’s calendar of events for live music listings and other special events!
Butterfly Jungle at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park
Each year the San Diego Zoo Safari Park turns their Hidden Jungle exhibit into a magical Butterfly Jungle as hundreds of butterflies emerge from their chrysalises. Children and adults alike marvel in the wonder of this display, and the exhibit is included with park admission.
Whale Watching
San Diego offers several options for whale watching tours, especially during the spring. December through April, you can look forward to seeing part of the Pacific grey whale migration, while May through November offers a glimpse at the migration of blue whales and fin whales. Many groups also see pods of dolphins (five varieties call the San Diego coastline home) as well as sea lions, ocean sunfish and local sea birds.
San Diego Travel and Adventure Show
On March 29 – 30 at the San Diego Convention Center, you can enjoy the best in travel deals, giveaways, and hand-on activities at this visitor-friendly show. Zip lines, climbing walls, and more are available for children and adults to try. You can also enjoy engaging panels and presentations by Travel Channel personalities and other exciting exhibitors.
Many people think that San Diego enjoys an “endless summer”, but in truth we here love to enjoy the changing seasons as much as anyone. Don’t miss these exciting and unique opportunities to see a side of San Diego you may have never seen before!
