Swimming is an essential skill for people to learn, no matter their age. Often, the best time to teach swim skills is when a child is young. Swimming lessons ensure that they learn in a safe, friendly, encouraging environment. Here are 5 benefits of teaching young children to swim through swimming lessons.
1. Safety. Knowing how to swim is very important when it comes to safety. Your child will likely be near water at one point or another. Even if they aren’t swimming, they risk slipping or being pushed into water. In case of this kind of situation, your child will know how to swim and stay afloat if they have taken swim lessons. This can give you peace of mind knowing they will be more likely to avoid a serious situation like drowning. In addition, many kids who don’t know how to swim and aren’t being supervised have been known to get into water to play with other kids. If they don’t know how to swim and enter deeper waters, they could easily panic and risk their lives. Although these are worst case scenarios, it is important that you prepare your child for encounters with water so they can participate in water activities safely with friends.
2. Fun and recreational. Swimming is also really fun! It gives kids time to be outdoors and away from their video games doing something active. They will be able to use up their energy while playing games, swimming different strokes, participating in Marco Polo and much more! This is a great summer activity to stay cool and refreshed as well.
3. Swim lessons help to build confidence in kids of all ages. When learning to swim, kids are able to develop confidence and pride. They will overcome difficulties and feel very proud when they learn to float, develop a new stroke skill, or increase their swim time and abilities! They will be coached by motivating instructors who can give them guidance, support, and encouragement.
4. Great exercise. Swimming is a wonderful cardio workout, plus it develops strength. Your kids will stay fit and active, maintaining healthy lifestyles. Plus teaching kids the importance of regular exercise will prepare them for adulthood and a lifetime of fitness and health. If they love swimming, exercise will never feel like a chore, it will be fun, relaxing and enjoyable.
5. Socialize and make friends. Swim classes often group multiple kids together. This teaches tolerance, social skills, and teamwork. They will meet new people outside of their regular circle and develop strong bonds and relationships. They may even go on to join a swim team later on.
Clearly, swimming lessons are a great option for young kids! The sooner your child learns to swim, the safer they will be. In addition to safety, swimming also provides kids with a confidence, socialization, health and fitness, as well as tons of fun! be sure to look into reputable swim schools like Swimtastic Swim School in your area to get your son or daughter started.
Great post. I agree with everything you wrote here. As a swimmer myself I am aware of the good benefits that swimming does to our body as adults, It is more effective especially if it is started at a young age. Like what was said here, swimming develops a child not only physically but also mentally, it helps kids get over some of their fears and encourage them to try new things. When I was a kid I remember having friends that were afraid of the water and I feel sorry for them because they were missing out on a lot, but then once they found the courage to go in the water they found out that it is not scary at all. I think parents should introduce swimming to their children because it would help them a lot especially to those who have breathing problems, swimming has helped a lot of people manage their breathing problem. Thank you for sharing this.

Swimming lessons are such a wonderful way to not only boost children’s confidence but to encourage physical activity, be outside, and like you mention socialize and make friends! Great post, thanks for sharing!
I think swimming lessons are wonderful. My son when he was little fell in the columbia river when he was with my in laws. He was revived and had cerebral palsy for 17 years. He was only 13 months old at the time. It is so important to watch kids around any water. I know how this can change peoples lives and drastically. Great tips and everyone should know them.
