Getting your kids to eat their veggies isn’t always as easy as it should be. Some children decide that they don’t want to eat their greens, simply because they’re told by TV shows, books, and movies that they’re not supposed to like them. Others simply don’t find the taste or texture appealing. However, as a parent you feel it’s your duty to get your children to eat vegetables. Luckily, there are some great ways to go about this task.

1. Play With Colors

Kids like to have fun and interesting colors around them. One great option is to use the colors of the fruits and vegetables to get kids eating. Instead of giving them the same color all the time – for example, only offering cucumbers or celery which are both green – consider adding in carrots or red bell peppers. This will give the children a variety of options, and they can pick which is their favorite color of vegetable.

2. Make it Fun

Doctors and nursing leaders suggest that four and five-year olds are supposed to have about two cups of vegetables per day. This can be difficult if you’re dealing with a picky eater. However, if you make it fun, they’re going to be more likely to choose veggies as their snack. Come up with interesting, silly names for different vegetables. Broccoli can become baby trees, allowing you to pretend with your child that they’re giants. The more fun you make the food, the more likely they are to eat it and enjoy it.

3. Hide the Vegetables

You know your child doesn’t like to eat veggies, but you also know that they need the nutrients. So, at some point it is likely that you’re going to add vegetables to food you already know they love. You don’t have to tell them everything that is in their food. You can purée the vegetables and include them in what the child loves. When you make a smoothie, add some spinach for their daily greens. Make delicious muffins with zucchini, or add applesauce to your recipe. Eventually your children will be begging for the sneaky foods you make.

4. Only Offer Healthy Options

Your kids will eat when they’re hungry. If you only offer healthy snacks, such as grapes or carrots that is what they’re going to eventually eat. On the other hand, if they know that they can take a candy bar instead, they’re more likely to opt for that. Get into the habit of only offering healthy, fruit and veggie filled snacks to your children through the day. This will not only cut down on the amount of junk food they consume, but increase the amount of fruits and vegetables they get in their diets.

Getting kids to eat foods they don’t want to eat is not an easy task. However, it’s your responsibility to offer your children the best options possible. While you may need to sneak in their healthy fruits and vegetables at first, eventually it will become a delicious habit.
