My girls absolutely love to play outside. I always love to try new things to change up our normal activities. Moon Sand was definitely a great fit for us. I have been wanting to try it out for awhile, but never really had a big enough container to put it in.

I went on a mission to buy everything that I needed for my girls to be able to play with the Moon Sand.

How To:

  • 1 5lb Bag of Flour
  • 2 Cups of Baby Oil

Pour the Bag of flour and the cups of Baby Oil into a big container. You then just have to mix with your hands until it is a nice smooth, powdery mixture.

I chose to make a double of this batch so that we had a good decent amount to out in our big container. I then gave my girls some measuring cups and spoons, as well as some plastic cups to play with.

The most exciting part is with the bag of flour as well as the baby oil, your total cost is around $3. I doubled it and bought a container and my total was right around $10.

My girls absolutely love to go outside and play with the moon sand. It truly feels just like flour to the touch of it, but it packs and builds great when they want to build castles, or whatever they have in mind. I find that it is much easier to play with it outside. The girls are pretty good about keeping it in the container, but it never fails that some of it falls outside of the container while they are playing.

I find that this is a great alternative to Sand. My husband hates mowing over sand that has fallen out of the sand box, and this is a great solution to that. Don’t get me wrong, i’m not going to throw out the sandbox just yet, but I have found that my girls truly prefer the moon sand over the sandbox.

I can’t wait to hear what you guys think about this awesome activity. My girls love it, and I’m sure that your kids will as well.

Comments

  1. I love this simple recipe and I can’t wait to try it. Will the oil cause staining on clothing at all?

  2. This is such a great idea! I never would have thought of it. My husband doesn’t like when we make a mess with the sand on the grass.

I agree completely. I have really taught my girls to keep it in the big container, but some always gets out. I just take the hose and quickly hose off our playing area when we are done, so there really is no mess 🙂
