Zelda has long been an institution for Nintendo from the first Legend of Zelda on the Nintendo Entertainment System to its most recent iteration Hyrule Warriors, great fun is to be had. Today we are looking at Hyrule Warriors a recent game which takes the familiar Zelda franchise characters and settings and adds Dynasty Warriors game play and game mechanics to create a great game for long time Zelda fans or new comers to the characters.

First of all it is important to know this game was made by two big game developers Team Ninja and Omega Force. The result is a masterfully put together game which is hack and slash by nature and Zelda by setting, character and even music. The game play itself is simple button mashing fun which is a welcome change for little ones playing the game. Little Man loves it compared to the more complicated RPG controls of other Zelda games, which he doesn’t have a firm grasp on yet. Emphasis on YET.

At the onset of the game the player picks a character and from then on unlock more characters to use throughout the story. Each level has various tasks to complete among which include conquering a fortress, finding an item or destroying a character. Those familiar with Zelda will have a slight edge over those who are not as the characters are the same as are some of the bosses, so the ‘trick’ to beating them is similar. What we found incredibly fun in our house is the 2 player co op, couch co-op. where one player uses the Wii controller (or pro controller) and plays on the TV while the other plays on the Wii U’s portable screen. This makes for some great fun when playing because the two of you can split up and divide and conquer. Or in our case Little Man likes running around and getting the opponents attention then running back with a hoard of villains behind him and watch Daddy ‘beat their butts’.

The game is in general great fun and a welcome addition to the Wii U’s already awesome catalog of games.

Hyrule Warriors is available as of Sept 26th and retails for $59.99 available both digitally on the Wii U eshop and at fine video game stores everywhere.
