Parasitic ticks are gruesome when they’re discovered on a loved one, especially young children. They derive their sustenance from sucking blood through piercings in the skin. There are countless ways to remove ticks once they’re latched, but you want to avoid them completely on your trips outdoors.
Trail Know-How
Heading out into the great outdoors is a pastime for many families who enjoy walking the trails in forests and mountainous regions. Trails are often surrounded by thick brush and grasses, which are perfect breeding grounds for ticks. Tell all family members to remain close to the trail’s center line. Clothes and equipment won’t accidentally touch the grasses as often, reducing the possibility of tick infestation. Keep all hands inside the trail as well. Even a passing hand across a shrub gives ticks a chance to take a ride on your body.
Off the Beaten Path
In some rural areas, backyards are larger than an acre, giving way to some unkempt plants. If your children are playing at a friend’s house, make sure they don’t go running through the wild plants across the property. Ticks hide within these areas, giving them a chance to latch onto any animals passing by. They aren’t particular about their host. They’ll latch onto people, pets and even rodents if possible. Remain in manicured areas to avoid tick exposure.
Yard Control
Even with diligent landscaping, your property could still have a bothersome tick population. Hiring a Professional Mosquito Control company periodically through the year gives your yard a fighting chance against infestation. Professionals apply a long-lasting treatment to deter ticks and mosquitoes from the area. Kids are free to play in the yard after the application. Today’s treatments aren’t harmful to people or plants.
Repelling with DEET
Avoiding ticks could be difficult on some hiking trips, so use an appropriate repellant with DEET. Spray it generously across the body and all equipment. You don’t want any ticks taking a ride into the home. DEET is safe for humans but repels insects from the area. A 30-percent concentration of DEET is perfect for safe travels outdoors.
Be vigilant about keeping all clothing, body parts and equipment away from tall grass and other tick-prone areas. Although you could have sharp eyesight, these insects have years of evolution behind them that make them smart at staying hidden. Keeping ticks away from your family through preventive measures is the best way to remain healthy.
