If your family is like most others, your actual dining room table rarely gets used. Sure, it’s the place where you put mail, dog leashes, and other odds-and-ends that don’t have a home, but you probably use this space primarily for entertaining. Whether you are planning dinner parties for the holidays or simply have a sitter for the night and want to invite over a few other couples for an evening of good food, wine, and conversation, you may be looking at that lonely dining room and feeling barely inspired. Since you don’t use the space, you haven’t put much effort into decorating either. Below are a few quick ways to turn this room into one worthy of entertaining.

Smokeless Fireplaces

Your first instinct may be to light some candles. After all, nothing creates ambiance quite like a dancing flame. This is great until you get halfway through dinner and one side of your four-tier candle caves in, permitting a flow of wax to infiltrate your table. Or, it’s always fun when someone can’t stop sneezing because of the fragrance. Do yourself a favor and opt for a smokeless fireplace instead. You could buy a tabletop one to use as a centerpiece or to set on a side table or you could get a wall-mounted one. You can find a smokeless fireplace at Ethanol Fireplace Pros.

Pendant Lighting

Do you actually ever use the fan on that boring ceiling light? If not, what’s the point in having it? A unique pendant light suspended above will create a floating centerpiece everyone at the table will appreciate.

Chair Covers

Although you can buy chair covers, you can also just make them, too. You don’t even necessarily need to sew anything if you don’t want to. Rich red velvet fabric with a white satin bow would be perfect for Christmas or Valentine’s Day. Having a New Year’s Eve gathering? Drape black fabric over your chair and hold it in place with silver or gold ribbon.

Festive Shades

Just imagine everyone sitting down to dinner on New Year’s Eve, and noticing Roman shades on the windows that have been painted and decorated with glitter saying “Happy New Year’s Eve!” You can buy paper shades that stick in place with adhesive, and can be painted for any occasion or season. You can also use fabric you have left over from making the chair covers.

Accent Wall

If you have been tossing around the idea of painting an accent wall somewhere in your home, your dining room is the perfect place to do it. It’s only one wall! It won’t take long, and it will have a dramatic impact on the room.
