We recently watched the new movie, coming out on Blu-ray/DVD on Jan. 27, called THE BOOK OF LIFE. We all wanted to see it- it looked good in previews. I am happy to say it was better then we thought it would be- it was good for kids and for adults, too. It was also visually stunning- very cool animation. Not sure why they chose to make weird wooden-puppet-people, but it worked and it was fun. The underworld/afterlife scenes were even more beautiful then the rest of the movie- quite magical.
My son has been a little obsessed with the Day of the Dead since he was about 3, which has lead to this momma trying to make sugar skulls, having class parties, and even a trip to Mexico to check out the festivities ourselves. (Hey- go big or go home, right?) There were all sorts of kid’s activites for him to try while we were there, and he learned all about the importance of family cultural traditions and visiting the headstones of those who have passed on, and how they are decorated and food and drinks brought on the special night to honor and remember the history of the family. I think our trip made this movie even cooler for him, since it helped him understand the celebration and what it was about.
About the Movie
“THE BOOK OF LIFE is a breathtaking animated comedy with a dazzling visual style unlike anything you’ve seen before. Torn between the expectations of his family and the desires of his heart, a young man named Manolo sets off on an epic quest that spans three spectacular worlds in order to reunite with his one true love and defend his village. Not your ordinary fairy tale, THE BOOK OF LIFE is a wondrous fantasy-adventure filled with magic, music and fun! It comes out on Blu-ray/DVD on Jan. 27, 2015.”
We decided to have a “mini-New-Year’s” party and watch the movie. We got hors d’oeuvres, and of course got my son his favorite (little pigs in blankets and pizza bites). We used the Book of Life themed resolutions list to see what we wanted to do most this year, as well as how we were doing on the resolutions we had already made.
My son wants to travel (shocker) and spend more time with mommy. How he plans to do either is beyond me, but it’s adorable and I thought so sweet. My husband thought about what he’d like to see in the next 5 years. I kept the dog from eating all the food. (The life of mom, right? Ha.)
There were also some cute lunchbox notes that we plan to use this week- but not today or tomorrow, since it’s snowing like crazy. My son really liked the pet pig in the movie, so it’s cute that he was featured as one of the notes. He also had fun wearing his “Day of the Dead” necklace and mask- daddy, though, went a little overboard and wore them all at once. That daddy.
This movie is super cute, and will be a conversation opener for kids who might not know what the Day of the Dead is. The movie is fun for everyone- and very rarely do we all agree on a movie in this house. Make sure you order yours or pick it up this week in time for your next family movie night!
What a fun movie night for the family. Super adorable!
We almost chose that movie to watch last night. I’m sure we will soon…it looked really cute.
I just heard about this movie and I know my kids would love it. You made such yummy snacks for the whole family! Yum!
I think my kids should watch this movie! They are always questioning the Day of the Dead and I could use some help explaining it.
Your family party looks fun! I haven’t seen the movie yet, but it does look interesting. Thanks for sharing your party fun and resolutions!
