With Valentine’s Day looming, love is in the air. We are thinking about it, watching movies and reading books about it, getting gifts in honor of it- in general, just dwelling on it. In the entire animal kingdom (humans included, it often seems) a lifelong partnership is rare, but many species offer great examples of how to keep a relationship together. Monogamy and lifelong pair bonds are generally rare, but there’s a few species that manage to maintain their love alive. Gibbons, wolves, bald eagles, and even cockroaches manage to keep it together. Yes, those gross little critters many people spend countless hours trying to eradicate have tiny-little-Valentine’s, lol.
The sad thing about our fellow mammals is how many of them are on the endangered species list. Climate change is one of the biggest reasons, with many plant, animal, and insect populations disappearing quickly. It is in our best interest to protect these species- their well being not only keeps them around, but it also contributes to the well-being of the planet and everything that lives on it (yes, you too).
Scientists predict that global warming would contribute to the mass extinction of wild animals in the near future. An overheating world is creating a big change in climatic conditions and this can harm the delicate ecosystems in which species live. (You can read more about that here.)
Consider making some changes in your daily life and routines to cut down the energy and fossil fuels you use. If it isn’t to far, walk or take your bike. Try to run multiple errands at once, instead of one at a time and conserve gas. Never leave your car running, or go outside to “warm it up”. It wastes gas, and emits needless “carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, and almost a quarter of the hydrocarbons emitted into our air. This air pollution carries significant risks for human health and the environment.” (According to the Union of Concerned Scientists)
You’ve heard it before, and you will hear it again. Take the time and recycle- even if it means you need to get a bin, or take it to a center yourself. If your community isn’t’ super environmentally friendly, it’s OK- just drive it to a local center yourself. Your contribution matters. You can even call your town municipality and see why they don’t recycle or recycle more- voices carry.
Take showers instead of baths, wash in cold water, only run the dishwasher if it’s full. These small things really do add up.
Have you considered changing to solar energy? Solar energy is considered environmentally friendly because the sun is a natural energy source that does not require the burning of fossil fuels and the associated air emissions. In addition, it is considered renewable since the energy produced from the sun does not deplete any natural resources and will never run out. Going solar will not only help reduce the effect of climate change on our planet, but will be great for your wallet too. In many U.S. states, solar is available for $0 down and you can go solar and start saving money on your bills at no cost.
Help restore our planet- it’s been abused enough. Once it is damaged past the point of no return, there won’t be a thing that can be done about it. Do what you can to help Earth and all it’s creatures, great and small. You got it- love one another.

Every time I see a home or business using solar panels I wish that I could be using those same resources. It makes me sad about all the endangered animals.
Good reminder that there are other energy options. Changes we make can help in so many ways animals and the planet.
We have been adding panel by panel. My husband is an electrician so he does it himself. I can’t wait to be off the grid!
I think about this a lot and it makes me really sad. I can’t bear that animals are losing their homes due to us. 🙁 Solar energy is getting more and more popular around here!
I will never understand why some politicians are still fighting the idea that global Change is happening. As far as I am concerned and at this point it is moot why or who caused it–we have to do anything and everything in our power to attempt to slow it down. Good post!
This is my kind of card. I just love when I can contribute through purchase. They are so adorable.
What a great way to spread awareness! I’m off to check the site out now. Thanks!
