Planning Ahead For Stress-free Travel With Your Baby

Regardless of your mode of transportation, traveling with a baby can quickly become overwhelming. There’s not much that can frustrate a mother more than to have to make an emergency stop for baby supplies with a screaming baby in her arms. Fortunately, a little forethought and planning is all that’s necessary to avoid this happening to you. Here are some suggested essentials to take along as you travel with your baby, so that you’ll be able to handle any emergency.

If you’re lucky, your little one will spend much of her time napping while you shop. To make your baby more comfortable, you should make sure to bring all the comforts of home along with you. If you’re staying overnight at a hotel, call ahead to see if they’ll provide a portable crib, or if you’ll have to bring your own. Also be sure to bring along extra crib sheets and blankets, just in case your baby makes a mess on the ones she’s using, and to ensure that she’ll be warm enough.

Purchase a good sized travel bag and lightweight travel stroller in which you can store all of your baby travel essentials. If you can find one with pockets, you’ll be so much happier. There are so many uses for them for convenient access to diaper pins, snacks, wipes, and other items. Inside your travel bag, pack a diaper changing pad and more diapers than you think that you’ll need. You never want to experience the horror of reaching into your diaper bag, only to discover that you didn’t pack enough diapers!

Also bring at least one extra change of clothing, more if your baby is prone to accidents. (It might also be a good idea to pack an extra shirt for yourself as well.) Pack burping clothes and baby wipes for cleaning up any messes that your baby makes while you’re out. Also make sure that you bring along any powder or creams that you like to use to prevent diaper rash.

You’ll also want to make sure that you bring along feeding supplies, including an electric breast pump if you use one. If you want to bring along expressed breast milk or premixed baby formula, you’ll need to keep them packed separately in an insulated storage container. Use a freezer block to keep them cold. If your baby is on solid foods, remember to pack bottles of baby food or snacks. Also pack all the supplies that you’ll need to feed your baby and a bottle warmer.

If you can, keep your baby’s travel bag packed and ready to go, so that you don’t have to run around gathering things if you have to leave on short notice. That is one of the surest ways to forget something important. Create your own personal baby travel essentials list, and use it when you prepack your travel bag. Planning ahead ensures that your trip out with your baby is a stress-free event, for you and for your baby.
