It’s essential to start taking care of your skin, especially if you have skin that’s prone to acne and breakouts. Oily skin is one of the known skin types that need a specific skincare regimen because it’s likely to develop pimples and blackheads if left unattended.

The main goal is not to convert your oily skin type to normal, but to control the condition of your skin and prevent acne flareups. Try to use products that are safe to use even for sensitive and acne-prone skin, and are not harmful to the environment, either- better for you and everything else, as well.

Here are tips and options for managing and taking care of your oily skin:

Modify Existing Skincare Specifically for Oily Skin

Active oil-producing glands in our face can cause oily skin. Check all the products that you’re currently using to see if they are suitable for oily skin. However, if the oil only appears on certain parts like the T section of the forehead, nose bridge, cheeks, and chin, then you might not have oily but combination skin.

  • Salicylic acid – increases the moisture content and dissolves other substances.
  • Tea tree oil – is a natural antiperspirant found in most anti-acne products.
  • Sulfur – helps in drying the skin surface, unclogging pores, and absorbing sebum or excess oil that contributes to acne breakouts.
  • Glycolic acid – improves the skin’s overall texture

You may already have a skincare routine, and you just realized that you have oily skin, you can improve it. If the products are for oily skin, but you don’t see any improvements in your skin condition, then you need to modify your existing skincare routine.

Follow the recommended skincare regimen below:

1. Double-cleanse, tone and moisturize twice a day

Double cleansing is crucial for oily skin. Start with an oil cleanser, cleansing balm, or makeup remover if you had to wear cosmetics. After oil cleansing, use cleansing foam or water cleanser.

Toning is essential to balance the pH level on your skin and remove the acids before applying treatments. It also acts as a third cleanser that removes stubborn dirt.

Wrap up your routine by gently applying an oil-free and light moisturizer. Do this twice a day to control your skin from producing too much oil the entire day.

2. Try using an astringent on alternate days

If you are suffering from excessively oily skin, you can opt to use an astringent every other day. This product will help further remove oil and tighten your pores. There are high levels of alcohol found inside an astringent that can be harsh and over-dry skin, which is why it’s not recommended for daily usage.

Never use astringent when you just exfoliated your face. If you have moderately oily skin, you can skip this step.

3. Exfoliate your face at least once a week

Dead skin cells can develop and clog your pores. Exfoliating your skin is an excellent way to prevent your pores from causing acne, which is a regular occurrence for oily skin types. Most people choose to exfoliate their face with oil-free scrub made for oily skin types. Always be extra gentle when scrubbing your face to avoid skin irritation and redness.

4. Use a facial mask once every week

There are many Korean skincare mask selections, so try to look for a facial mask that contains clay as it can give your face deep-cleansing and can soak up excess sebum, which will help reduce shine for days. Also, try facial masks that contain honey that can soothe and prevent skin from drying out too much. Some of these masks may over dry your face, so you might consider placing them at the oiliest part of your skin.

The Bottomline

Customize your skincare products. Trying out those specifically made for people with oily skin does not always mean all of them will suit you. Some may contain ingredients that may irritate your skin or cause breakouts. You have to be careful of the products you apply on your face as they can be harmful to your skin. So now is the perfect time to make an action and get that fresh, shine-free complexion you’ve always wanted.
