Bronx Zoo Animal Tales Extravaganza

Animal Tales Extravaganza returns to the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo for the third year, on weekends from Saturday, April 21 through Sunday, June 30. And Animal Tales Extravaganza is included with your zoo admission!
Each weekend of Animal Tales Extravaganza includes an array of activities for families and children. The zoo’s Dancing Crane Pavilion will be transformed into an intimate story time corner, presented by Plum Organics. Zoo-goers can take a break and read from a wide variety of animal-themed books from Simon & Schuster, Candlewick Press, and Hyperion. Children can then stage their own animal tale with a puppet they create at the Bright Horizons Early Education & Preschools crafts area.

In addition, this year features a special production – Avenue ZOO – featuring a guest appearance by Kate Monster, the beloved puppet star of the Tony Award-winning musical AVENUE Q.
Running each weekend on the zoo’s Asia Plaza Stage, Avenue ZOO highlights the importance of wildlife conservation in a fun, entertaining way. It is a musical tale in which Kate Monster meets exotic animals and discovers that though they may seem strange and different, they are not as scary as she thought. Avenue ZOO performances will be at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. each weekend from Saturday, April 21 through Sunday, Sept. 9.
Also, the main stage has something for everyone throughout the spring season. Highlights of this season’s main stage entertainment include:

Phineas and Ferb: The Best Live Show Ever

Disney’s new Phineas and Ferb, The Best Live Show Ever was a fun, lively experience for the entire audience. The ages in the audience ranged from the very small to tweens (and of course their parents), and focused on the brothers’ adventures with friends trying to experience every drop of summer. On the last day of summer vacation, Phineas and Ferb find themselves in front of a live audience, and slide down from the TV screen (where you can watch them daily) onto the stage.

Egypt Toob from @SafariLtd

Traveling and history go hand in hand. When I’m traveling, then naturally I’m learning all about the history of a place as well. Visiting different monuments and locations in any country makes it more meaningful if I’m already aware of the culture and history from its past. If you are not already aware- pick up a local guidebook (what better way to figure it out?)

It is never too early to start teaching history to children in an entertaining fashion.
Egypt is a fascinating place filled with the history of art, culture, and ancient civilizations. I want to pass the desire to learn about other places and their history to Little Man. It needs to be fun, yet mingled with little facts that he can grasp onto. Safari Ltd. has a wonderful Ancient Egypt [Read more…]

Top 5 Healthy Habits to Impart on Your Kids

When it comes to hygiene and healthy living, kids can definitely “go against the grain”, but as most of us
can recall from our own childhoods, that’s not the result of being “bad” or even negligent. Dirt, messes, and
creative ways of keeping a bathroom, they all simply come with being a kid.

However, there is a wonderful flip side to this coin and that’s while children may not be the tidiest, they do
tend to be the most receptive to change and growth—in other words, they’re teachable and so if you want
them to live a healthy lifestyle, it’s usually simply a matter of showing them what to do.

Are you ready to get serious about imparting some healthy habits on your kids? Here are five ways.

Wash Those Hands

It’s a tried and true rule that should never go out of style. When your child comes inside from outdoors,
when s/he finishes using the bathroom and before every meal, they should definitely wash their hands.
Now, here’s the thing: When you’re teaching them, it’s a good idea to supervise. You can make it fun by
getting their hands full of suds and singing a song (or at least 30 seconds worth of one) along with them
until they are done. Make sure it’s in warm water because a cold temperature won’t do a lot for killing
germs.

Watch the Snacking
A great way to curb constant snacking is to have your children only eat in the kitchen and only during
designated times. For instance, other than the three main meals of the day, there is certainly room for a
couple of treats between meals, but if they can do it while watching television or playing video games, that
doesn’t leave a lot of room for moderation. Snack time should be in the room where most eating takes place
as well and make sure that it’s healthy things like fruits, raw vegetables, nuts, popcorn and dark chocolate.
Does that mean they can’t have anything sweet? Of course not, but that’s what dessert it is for, right? Right.

Drink Water

We’re made up of mostly water and that alone should inspire us to want to drink more of it. However,
another thing to keep in mind is that even if soda is not readily available in your home, juice that’s not
consumed in moderation [Read more…]

Shoe Lights- An Illuminating Review

It’s Summer time and the nights are getting longer, but there is still that creeping darkness that always seems to put an end to the most fun games of tag or exploring. What to do as bed times near and school ends.
When I was younger it, was hide and seek with flashlights and glow sticks. Great fun, but in the end flashlights would lose power quickly and didn’t really help while running full speed from ‘it’…..

But how great are these?
National Geographic and Uncle Milton have got this great new product, Shoe Lights. To the rescue again, saving kids with the awful dilemma of not having night vision built into our eyes. Oh, the humanity!!! LOL. The shoe lights are made specifically for shoes. Fancy that! They help light the way on those night expeditions looking for critters or even just looking for a safe spot to plant your foot. The lights have two different modes [Read more…]
