High above the Golden Gates of San Francisco, where the Pacific meets the San Fransisco Bay, stands a stunning piece of architecture- The Legion of Honor. This building serves as the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco. The Legion was originally constructed as a replica of the Palais de la Legion d’Honneur in Paris. The replica was designed by George Applegarth and was officially sanctioned by the French government in 1915. However, because of World War I, the ground breaking didn’t occur until 1921.

The museum is home to thousands of works of fine art including 100,000 works of art from Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Near East spanning over 4,000 years of art. In addition to an extensive collection of famous works, there are also Exhibits which including:

July 28, 2012 – January 27, 2013
November 17, 2012 – April 28, 2013
November 17, 2012 – May 12, 2013
Another interesting program at the museum offered every Saturday and Sunday are the Organ performances on the famous Legion of Honor’s Skinner organ. These concerts are offered for free every Saturday and Sunday at 4:00 pm, as long as the museum itself is open that day. What makes this particular organ so special is this is the only indoor and outdoor organ. Skinner’s other world famous organs include both organs at both Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City Washington Cathedral in the nation’s capitol.
There are even discounts available for admission tickets, find out more about the tickets online.
