Video games can be difficult to gauge on the surface, especially ones which are franchises.  The gems of these are usually few and far between, but in recent years there have been some notable exceptions.  These include Toy Story and the popular Batman: Arkham series.

To be a gem, the game has to tie into the move/cartoon/character while also being fun and interesting.  Turbo: Super Stunt Squad is the newest game by D3 featuring characters from the movie Turbo.  This game is a stunt based game.  Think the popular skate boarding games of yester year minus humans and skateboards and instead super speed boosted snails.
Initially there are a few levels open.  Each level is based on a  human environment, but from a snails perspective.  These settings include a kitchen at a fast food establishment and a nail salon.  In each level there are collectibles and upgrades which unlock new abilities as well as open up new portions of the level to explore and conquer.

There are characters you can pick from to customize and personalize.  Five of your options are Turbo, Smoove Move, Whiplash, Skidmark and Burn.  Each of which has a unique feel and unique special abilities.like Turbo’s Tuck and Roll, and Skidmark’s Nitro Boost.
Each level can be played co-op as well as solo.  Little Man and Dad gave the game a shot in co-op and it was fun for the most part for both of them, but the memories of playing Tony Hawk of yester-year definitely made it all the more enjoyable for Dad.  The chief complaint with this game is a lack of a customizable sound track.   The soundtrack isn’t bad for a kids game, it could just be better if I had the ability to pick what was playing.
Overall I would say this game is worth picking up and is one of those rare gems that let you re-live a previous style of video game while still having a relevant gaming experience with your kids.
Turbo is available now for the Wii, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, Wii U, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
