When it comes to holiday destinations, Southeast Europe is perhaps one of the most overlooked and underrated regions in the world, with much of Western Europe taking the limelight. A closer look, however, reveals just how much people are missing out on. Southeast Europe, often referred to as the Balkans, is home to a vast number of stunning countries with fascinating and unique cultures.
Croatian delights
Dubrovnik, a city in Croatia, is amongst the most popular of these, and with glorious beaches, ancient buildings, glistening marinas and extensive history, it isn’t difficult to see why. Your friends will definitely love the idea of going on weekend breaks to Dubrovnik. Visit this city and know why it’s one of Europe’s top holiday destinations for tourists. Featured as a recommended city break by the award winning travel website of newspaper the Telegraph, Dubrovnik is becoming an increasingly popular choice for travellers who are looking for something a little more interesting than your average beach holiday.
A taste of celebrity
Dubrovnik’s tourist industry has certainly been helped by the number of celebrities taking holidays there. Visits from the likes of Jay Z, Beyonce, Ashley Judd and John Malkovich have contributed to it becoming a notoriously star-studded destination, and with the critically acclaimed TV series Game of Thrones choosing it as one of the main filming destinations for their recent series, it will no doubt become even more notorious for its celebrity and pop culture connections.
The best of the rest
Greece is another immensely popular destination in Southeast Europe, and it has plenty to offer visitors. If you are a history enthusiast with a taste for good Mediterranean food and luscious beaches, you’ll fall in love with the island at first sight…and taste. If hustle and bustle and partying are more up your street, head to Kosovo, party central, for a wild and cheap break.
For something completely different we have Serbia. Full of history, beautiful parks and a rather vibrant night life in Belgrade, Serbia is an understated destination with a difference. It is not heavily frequented by tourists, so you are guaranteed a truly authentic experience and a real chance to get to explore a different culture and way of life. Its mountains are a magnificent sight to behold, and they have become popular skiing and winter sport resorts, and boast two national parks.
