Top 5 Tips for a Last Minute Family Road Trip

Summer is here at last and a quintessential part of summer is road tripping. Hitting the open road with
the family, a cooler of sandwiches, and the windows down is a fun and cheaper way to get out of town. If
you haven’t planned out a summer road trip yet, don’t worry! It’s not too late. Use these tips to execute a
fun and rewarding family road trip at the last minute.

Do a Little Research and Preparation
The unknown journey ahead of you may be exciting, but do at least a little planning ahead of time. Choose
a route, a few key destinations and get an idea of where you’ll be able to stay during the nights when
you want to stop. Prepare for emergencies by making sure your spare tire is full and that your car has its
emergency kit ready and stocked. You may even want to go your mechanic for a quick oil change so he can
also do an inspection and make sure the car is road-trip ready.

Plan the Nights
If you can, book hotel rooms in cities where you’d like to stay for the night for long road trips. Since this
is last minute, though, you may have trouble finding hotel rooms so consider packing up your family tent
and all the gear needed and stay at campgrounds along your route. It will save you tons of money over
using hotels or motels and create an experience in and of itself on the road trip. Plus if you’d like to bring
the dog along, you won’t have to worry about what do with him if you camp. Another bonus to camping
is that you can go with the flow a little easier since you can camp just about anywhere along the way. You
may find yourself on routes you never even knew existed and would have never found staying within city
limits.

Fun Kids Games for Long Car Rides

If you’ve decided to make this summer’s family vacation a road trip, you’re probably
already wondering how the little ones will fare during those unending hours on the open
road. It’s a great opportunity to show your kids the country, while seeing several different
destinations much more cheaply than if you flew everywhere. But it’s also all too easy
for boredom to set in, leading to stressful arguments and frustrating misbehavior. You
can combat all of these potential issues in advance by planning out a bunch of games
and activities to keep your kids occupied while on the road. Many cars come with built-in
televisions, but if you don’t want your kids zoning out to movies the whole time, here are
some fun kids games for long car rides.

The first option is more an activity than a game, but one your adventure-minded
children will love. Get them a map of your journey so they can keep track of your
progress. They can draw on it in highlighter, keeping up with each mile you cross during
the day. Older children may love pulling out a compass and helping mom and dad
navigate. And for younger children, consider showing them how to make their own map.
Draw your part of the country on a large sheet of paper, with home at one end and the
destination at the other. Every time you stop somewhere, have them draw their favorite
sights from along the way.

The license plate game is another classic option that modern kids still love. Print out
a map of the United States, ideally one that shows each state’s license plate. Then have
your kids keep an eye out to spy the license plates of [Read more…]

Around the World in 80 Bricks- A Mini(land) Photo Essay

We recently spent some time in Florida’s newest theme park- Legoland. And while I have a lot to tell you about our time there, I was really fascinated by MiniLand USA– where entire replicas of cities and famous buidings were built painstakingly out of LEGO bricks.
How many places can you go to for worldwide travel, while never leaving the same spot? LOL.

The only real way to show you how fabulous this is, is with a [Read more…]

Looking for NYC Travel Options? Check Out @TheBenjaminNYC Hotel

We recently had the pleasure of experiencing the accommodations at The Benjamin Hotel in New York City.
They have a wonderful package going on right now called Lions and Tigers and Cereal, where families that book can experience a fun-filled family package including tickets to the Central Park Zoo, sunscreen and a Frisbee for some park fun, a few boxes of cereal delivered to the room the night before so it is ready for the kids, and room service breakfast the next day for mom and dad from Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian’s restaurant, located in the hotel.

The staff was friendly and helpful- which any mom will tell you is key when traveling with little ones. They even found me a new needle when mine broke and I NEEDED to fix Little Man’s owl- it had a hole- and it was just a major emergency, as you can imagine 🙂
The hotel was very clean and well organized. The refrigerator was well stocked, if pricey. The bathroom shower was clean enough to give the kids a bath in- which as you know I am VERY particular about.

You can also order up many pillows as you’d like from the 12-choice pillow menu. While that may sound odd- it was really a cute, interesting experience, and the kids had fun. Oh yes, and of course- a pillow fight.

After said pillow fight, the kids took a bath and got into their Winkzzz kid-sized robes, provided by the hotel. The staff delivered up some cookies and milk, as well as a plate of fruit for an evening snack, and then it was time to start winding down for bed. I thought that the milk and cookies (with a healthy option) was a nice touch, and very sweet for the kids. They really enjoyed it, and it felt more like home to them. Something familiar. As for bedtime routines- the hotel offers a wide variety of lending books to choose from- you choose the ones that appeal to your child(ren), and then they remove them the next day when you are finished with them. One less thing to pack, and it is fun for the kids to pick- like a portable library- how adorable is that?

The kids also liked snuggling with Winkzzz himself (well, ok- the stuffed version- an owl by Mary Meyers) while they read their books, were read to, and got ready for bed.
The next day, the [Read more…]
