Trouble in Toyland

Holiday shopping season is upon us once again. As a parent, shopping for toys for the children in your life can be a challenge.

We don’t always know if the gifts will be a hit but the one thing we count on is that the toys we purchase are safe. Thanks to the hard work of agencies like the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and consumer advocates like NJPIRG that’s largely true. But as our toy shopping researchers have found, that’s not always the case.

Each year, NJPIRG publishes a report, “Trouble In Toyland,” that highlights a sampling of unsafe toys, ones we found in a survey of toy stores across the country. Over the past 25 years, the findings of our report have paid off, leading to more than 100 recalls and millions children’s products pulled from store shelves. The findings also provided valuable evidence in support of the need for a 2008 law that gave the CPSC more authority to crack down on manufacturers and importers of dangerous toys.

Despite important progress, parents need to be aware of ongoing hazards and be on the lookout for unsafe products. More than 250,000 American children made trips to the emergency room in 2009 due to toy-related injuries. Toy safety should not be a political or partisan issue. I have yet to hear any policy maker argue ‘caveat emptor’ (let the buyer beware) as it relates to toddlers. That is why it is all the more shocking to see new, sweeping attacks in Congress on some of the most basic health and safety [Read more…]

Prevent Injuries: Tips for Childproofing Your Home Office

If you are a stay-at-home mom or dad, you may think that working from a home office is the solution
to one of the biggest problems plaguing parents today: how do you balance the pressures of work
with being present for your children? And while a home office does seem like an excellent solution,
it can also provide temptations for tykes who go exploring in the wrong place. This can result in
damages to your office or equipment and injuries for your children. If you want to increase or keep your
productivity and spend quality time with your precious babies, follow these easy tips for childproofing
your office:

Safety spot check. That open power outlet is a wonderful place to introduce Mr. Spoon. And those
cords dangling from the window blinds make excellent ropes for climbing and exploring. If your child
has access to the room where you keep your office and you think they can access it (and odds are that
they will), you can practice prevention by being proactive instead of reactive: cover up outlets that are
not in use, keep window blind cords secured and out of reach of tiny hands, and make sure that there
are no chemicals (even something simple, like white out) laying out for kids to consume. If you store
them in drawers, make sure the drawers are locked. Keep electrical wires stored or tied.

Put It Away! Install cabinets in your office with drawers and doors that can be secured, latched, or
locked. This will [Read more…]

All About Savings! How to do it- and some great tips!

The following is a guest post by Outside the Box Mom:

Saving Money with Coupons

Grocery shopping is a necessary evil. We all have to do it. But how much it costs you and how long it takes you is completely negotiable. Grocery shopping causes the least headaches when paired with a simple plan.

1. You Need a Grocery List

Track items as you run low. Don’t wait until you run out or you will pay full price for the items you need. Determine what makings of a meal you already have. Finalize it into a plan of what you want to make this week. Make a list of any items you still need. Pay attention to items on sale this week. Use coupons to stretch your grocery budget (visit sites that offer coupon matchups for your store by doing a Google search ( i.e. “Food Lion matchups” or “Food Lion deals”)). Organize the list in the same order as the aisles.

2. Grocery Trips Need to Be:

  • Efficient (Organize the list in the same order as the aisles.)
  • Affordable (Aim for the lowest prices on each item you buy.)
  • Scheduled (Set a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly shopping schedule and [Read more…]
