Moving abroad as a family

Though twenty-somethings can move quite freely from country to country, moving as a family is often much harder and complex, especially if you do not quite understand the full scope of what you need to do.

Here however, are a few hints and tips to making the transition a whole lot easier:

Know what to take with you

Ensuring that you take the right possessions is important for your pockets. For this, there is a general ‘shipping worthy’ test that you can do to work out whether an item is actually worth shipping.

For example, a Thomas the Tank Engine toy is small, and as shipping costs are usually based on volume basis, small items and toys are likely to be much cheaper to ship than to replace.

If you’re unsure, international movers like John Mason can help you throughout the entire moving process, guiding and advising you the whole way along.

Pick your timing well

Not only will you have to consider new school schedules and times, but before you even think about sending them off to a classroom, you have to make sure that they are accustomed to the new country in which they have just moved to.

Do you know your health plan options? #TakeCareChat Twitter Party

Did you know that more than half of the uninsured could find insurance for less than $100 per month (under $50 for people under 35)? The uninsured are exposed to significant financial risk from medical issues, accidents or emergencies. Even young and healthy individuals are at-risk. One trip to the emergency room for a broken arm or a bad ear infection could cost thousands of dollars.

Open enrollment for marketplace coverage is set to begin again in the fall, but Medicaid and CHIP is open year-round, and special enrollment is ongoing. As with other elements of the health care law, many of those eligible for coverage don’t understand all the details.

While the Health Insurance Marketplaces don’t open until November 15th, certain “qualifying life events” (like getting married, having a baby, adopting a child, moving, losing your current health insurance, and more) could allow you to get covered now.

Do you know your health plan options? Check out the resources available at: http://www.getcoveredamerica.org

Twitter Party Info:

  • Join our Twitter Chat on June 25th from 1-2pm Eastern using #TakeCareChat to learn more about Get Covered America and your options under the ACA. Since we’re talking about “qualifying life” events, we’ll be joined by two special guest experts.

“Discover the Forest” Twitter Party #ForestFriday

Most of our kids (and adults) can use more time in the great outdoors.  Why not take advantage of summer’s great weather (and possible vacation time) to get away from your desk, unplug a bit, and get some time in the great outdoors? That’s what #ForestFriday is all about.  Go local, get out and visit a national park, or go big and hit up one you’ve been wanting to forever- the choice is yours and the options are limitless.

I’ve been trying to talk a friend of mine into camping- we are big campers here, but she’s a bit weary- so perhaps “glamping” is more your style- and hers.  We are thinking of taking our kids to a local kid-themed campground, complete with pool and bathrooms.  Not exactly roughing it, but spending time outdoors together will be fun for us all and it will be great to get away from our normal desk areas.

Check out to visit: www.DiscoverTheForest.org for some great ideas for ways to spend outdoor time with your kids and family .  DiscoverTheForest.org features an interactive map tool that enables users to search for nearby forests and parks, and filter by zip code and desired activities. Free outdoor activities are also available for download and printing, which you can take the next time you visit.

We’re going to Splish Splash in Long Island. I don’t know about your kids, but my guy is insane over water parks.  When we’re at a regular amusement park, they want to be on the water slides- the whole day.  I don’t know what it is about water parks, but kids are 100% committed to seeing all of them.
