Olive Garden – New Menu

Where do you go for some wonderfully cooked Italian food, in an Italian-inspired environment with some very nice people serving it?  The Olive Garden, of course.  Olive Garden is a chain of Italian restaurants across the country filling plates with Italian fare while creating smiles and full stomachs.

With promotions running all the time to enjoy.  As well as both a rotating menu of season dishes and specials as well as classic favorites like lasagna and grilled chicken Alfredo.  There is something for everyone on the menu even the pickiest of eaters.

During a recent visit Little Man and myself had a filling meal.  The meal started as most do at Olive Garden with a wonderful salad, but to bring the salad up a notch we added and antipasto.  This adds Italian cheeses and meats of various types to the all you can eat salad.  This addition is great and makes an already good salad even better.  Up next we had some chicken meatballs from the appetizer menu which Little Man devoured as if he has been starved for days.

Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament – Lyndhurst, NJ

08 24 12 Nikon 234

A feast for the eyes as well as the stomach, Medieval Times is a great show that the whole family can enjoy.  No worries, the little ones won’t be afraid- the show is very tame (rated G!) while still offering tons of fun and action. Make sure you arrive early to give yourself time to check out the torture exhibit should you so desire- not recommended for kids, obviously.  You can also (for an extra fee) have your child knighted for their birthday or other special occasion by the king in a special ceremony.  Launched in Spain in 1973, and in the USA  just 10 years later, it is widely regarded as the longest running and most popular dinner attraction in North America- and I have to concur.  During this 2 hour live performance, you and your family will experience a glace back in time- when knights defended the realm, and chivalry was not dead.

Summer Effortless Meals with Walmart

Disclosure- I received compensation in order to buy items for this blog post. All opinions are my own. Thanks to The Coca-Cola Company for providing compensation for this blog post.

300x50_Pizza

Summer is right around the corner with long hot days and tiring nights.  As temperatures rise, the want to cook in a hot kitchen decreases and quickly.  Who would want to hang out in a hot kitchen making chicken for an hour when there is an easier way that could actually fit into your schedule?  With Summer comes sports and outdoor parties and pools  The kids are around more often which is great but also adds another dimension to your day.

Walmart and Coca-Cola have come together to help families out a bit this Summer with their new Effortless Meals.  The way the meals work is each meal consists of a main dish, sometimes a side and always a Coca-Cola product.  Your options are Rotisserie Chicken and a side, Take and Bake Pizza, or sandwich and chips.

IHOP’s Newest Menu Item

Picture this- it is mid-week and you have no idea what to make for dinner.  The kids want pizza but you want something a bit more satisfying after the week you’ve been having.  Something that tastes like home and everyone would love.  How about breakfast at IHOP for dinner?  While there, why not try their newest menu addition Cinnamon Swirl Brioche French Toast.

IHOP’s menu is perfect for those mid week slumps in meals by pepping everyone up a bit.  Maybe you are dying for something sweet and satisfying like a nice warm breakfast while the kids want chicken fingers and soup.  This isn’t possible at every restaurant but at IHOP any time of day is breakfast time.  What is nice about IHOP is there ever changing menu.  And their most recent addition is a welcome.  Their newest Brioche French Toast is cinnamon swirl.  They start with two sliced of Brioche French Toast, in a vanilla batter and grilled to perfection.  Then they add a cinnamon roll icing on the top.  This icing is the same you’d find on a cinnamon roll but instead of rolled up its spread on thick and delicious.  Finally a cream cheese icing is drizzled on top of them and the fin really starts, you get to eat it.

Pack Up and Head To South Carolina

If you are looking for a quiet spot to spend time as a family, where time seems to slow down but there is still plenty to do when you are feeling active, take a gander at Beaufort, South Carolina.  This sleepy town is so picturesque that Hollywood has used it as the backdrop for such films as “The Prince Of Tides” and “Forest Gump”, and while there are many lovely cafes, bakeries, chocolateries, coffee shops, and restaurants in the district, you won’t find a Starbucks or a McDonalds in town.  Welcome to beautiful Beaufort.

Take a tour of the downtown area in a horse drawn carriage- Southern Rose Buggy Tours offers them with a covered top to protect you and yours from the Southern sun.  The tour guide and driver know the area inside and out, telling you all about not only historical landmarks and homes that you pass, but also stories and legends that go hand in hand with history (both modern and long past).  There is an amusing anecdote related to Barbara Streisand and the local Marines that is sure to have your group laughing- make sure you ask what “the sound of freedom” is if your guide forgets to tell you.  Each tour lasts about an hour, and if you bring peppermint candies along, you will be able to give the carriage horse a treat.

Cruise around the area with Captain Dick River Tours on the Prince of Tides sightseeing boat, where you will often see dolphins, cranes, and other wildlife as you tour the river. The daily hour and 15 minute tour leaves the Downtown Marina at the Beaufort Waterfront Park at 2pm, all seats are $24 (no charge for infants).   The kids will love to see the local fauna, and mom and dad will also enjoy hearing about the historic homes, celebrity sightings, and filming stories.  There is also a 2 hour sunset cruise option two days a week (seasonally) Tuesday and Saturday evenings.

After you are done exploring the downtown Waterfront Park and Playground, make a quick stop to Southern Sweets Ice Cream Parlor.  The kids will be thrilled with any ice cream stop, but this old fashioned ice cream parlor will be a hit with everyone.  Complete with soda fountains, hand dipped ice cream, and marble table tops, you can get anything from an ice cream cone to a banana split to an egg creme and more.  They also have home made brownies and pralines, a must try.   If you feel that your sweet tooth still isn’t satisfied, and perhaps you’d like a unique souvenir to take home with you, make sure you pay a visit to The Lollipop Shop.  Not only do they carry every kind of candy (and sweet beverage) you could desire- even the hard to find, old fashioned or “retro” stuff- but you can buy your candy in many ways.  By the piece, the pound, the box, or the stuffed animal.  You read that right- you (or your child, should you feel so  generous) can choose from two sizes and about two dozen styles of stuffed toys, which come “hollow”, so to speak.  You then stuff your toy full of candy from the baskets in the store, and when it’s full, they close it up, name it, and give you a “birth certificate” for your new buddy.  They also give you a box of stuffing to take with you, so that when the candy is eaten, you have a soft and cuddly toy to keep forever.  This was nearly everyone’s favorite find, and one that we will surely visit again next time we are in the area.

National Donut Day June 6, 2014

5 12 14 012

Now that the big one, Mother’s Day is over its time to get ready for the next holiday.  That’ s right none other than National Donut Day occurs on June 6 2014.  To celebrate this wonderful holiday be sure to grab some donuts and chow down.  Everyone celebrates Donut day differently, some dress up in costumes others make special meals celebrating the versatility of the round treat.  Luckily for us Entenmann’ s is celebrating too and with some help from their friends in the Salvation Army.

To celebrate Doughnut Day Entenmann’ s and the Salvation Army are rolling out a brand new donut for us all.  The new flavor is Red Velvet.  Entenmann’s has decided Donut Day is in a great time of year, spring,  to bring around a new velvety smooth cake surrounded by a creme cheese icing.  With birds chirping and brightly colored flowers blooming why not enjoy it with a Red Velvet donut?

Meeting Kristi Yamaguchi and Finding Alpine Lace’s Perfect Match

Yesterday, I was able to “Dine, dance and discover” with Kristi Yamaguchi, the Alpine Lace Deli Cheese brand spokesperson in New York City.  At this event, we chatted about family life, what matters most to each of us, and the things that make out days that much better.  We also tried out some fun and delicious pairings with Alpine Lace cheese, and learned some dance steps.  Yep- we tore up the dance floor.  OK- maybe there was no actual “Dance Floor”, but life is what you make of it, ay?  We were dancing, it was a dance floor!  🙂

Kristi Yamaguchi (who was on the TV Show “Dancing With the Stars”) even gave us a performance of the Rumba steps to inspire the wallflowers among us.

Being a mother is hard work!  There is never enough sleep, enough time, or enough energy to get through each week.  Day after day, we make small decisions that open the door to a lifestyle of not taking as much care of ourselves as much as we should be.

Taking small steps is the key to getting back on track to a healthy lifestyle and good eating habits, for both you and your children.  Choosing healthy snacks, lower fat options, and whole foods is a great way to take back control of your diet.  Need ideas?  Start with cheese.

Alpine Lace ® Deli Cheese is a high-quality, wholesome, satisfying cheese that provides enough indulgence to fuel your day.

The best thing about Alpine Lace Cheese is that the perfect on-the-go snack, too!  Show me a mother and I will show you someone that needs great, portable snacks.  There is something about having kids that automatically makes you a taxi and when you’re in the car constantly, as I am, it is easy to fall into the rut of chips, burgers, and candy bars.  Challenge yourself to be prepared with better options: nuts, fruits, and Alpine Lace Reduced Fat Swiss Cheese.  Not only can it be paired with apples and grapes as a mess free car snack, you can also use it in sandwiches and recipes for a more filling meal.
