Disney on Ice- Get Your Tickets NOW!

I adored this magical performance of Disney On Ice- MICKEY & MINNIE’S MAGICAL JOURNEY. Why? It was something a little different- a nearly Princess-free show! Yes, yes, we all love the princesses. But so often, the shows are just consumed by them- in fact, the last show was called Princesses on Ice, LOL. So, how refreshing for a little change in the line-up. The vacation theme? You know I loved that! One more thing I loved, as a mommy of a little guy? There was almost nothing at all (AT ALL) scary in this show. I will elaborate.

Most of the shows have villains, yes? Because that is what Disney does- show the good triumph over evil- but lets be real. Some of those characters can be quite dark, and I quite often get emails, tweets, and comments asking if I think that a young child would be afraid. For this show, I can answer NO- I think almost any child wouldn’t have a moments fear. There were only two times that only the most fearful child would screech- but I didn’t hear any, and honestly they were trivial moments, very brief, and super non-frightening. I would without a doubt bring a small child to this show without a worry in the world about scary characters.

In Act One of this show, we were treated to my son’s favorite- The Lion King! He was in love with the “soft costumes, not plastic costumes” that Simba and Nala wore. While he likes Rafiki, Pumbaa and Timone- it’s of course Simba that took the cake for him. They did a wonderful job transitioning juvenile Simba to the adult, as well.
The world according to Little Man- “They had soft costumes, so Simba was huggy and soft, since he is a baby. Then Big Simba came and played with Nala and his friends. But Scar didn’t even come, since I know he knows what happens next- off the rock. Yeah, but he didn’t even come today. So that’s good for Simba. Simba hates fighting.” There you have it- Little Man’s first Disney review, LOL. (He was asked by a third party what he thought of the show, LOL- and that was his answer. I am glad I had a notebook to write it down, it amused me!)

Enter the Little mermaid- under the sea! Since we are taking a vacation, you know we have to visit the ocean 🙂 We can all use a little more seashore! No scary transformations, crashing ships, Sebastian chopping [Read more…]

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party- a Special Event at Magic Kingdom

Nothing compares to Disney- one of the greatest of all American Icons, and one of the most recognizable faces in all the world. This year for Christmas, celebrate with Mickey and all his friends at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, a special event at Magic Kindom Park at Disney World.

We had the pleasure of attending last week, and the kids had an amazing time- they had more fun at the Christmas Party then they did during the day if you can believe that!
The park closes early for this event, but don’t worry- if you have tickets, you can go right back in! As soon as you get there, Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmastime Parade begins- complete with a special appearance by Santa Claus himself. While he comes up the rear- I can’t say that he was the main attraction for many- it was still Micky and Minnie!

It was magic! The dancers and Disney characters never fell out of step or character- they were the person who they were stepping into! Real magic for your child- and you too. So many adults just love Disney- there were as many adults as children online to see the Princesses and characters for photos!

There were so many grown-ups, Disney Magic is for everyone! Some of the other wonderful attractions for the Very Merry Christmas Party include-

  • The enchanted Castle Dream Lights on Cinderella Castle
  • Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmastime Parade, complete with a special appearance by Santa Claus himself
  • An exclusive holiday fireworks extravaganza — Holiday Wishes: Celebrate the Spirit of [Read more…]

Disney Princesses on Ice- a Magical Performance (Dare to Dream)

We recently took my son and his little friend Capt. E to see Disney Princesses on Ice.
It was my favorite Princess show we have seen so far- not that I am hard to please when it comes to Disney!

We went to see Dare to Dream, produced by Feld Entertainment, which focused on some of the “newer” Princesses- Tiana and Rapunzel, as well as the classic favorite Cinderella. My Little Man has not seen The Princess and the Frog, and neither has his momma (Gasp! I know.) but that didn’t stop us from loving the story or the performance. He most enjoyed when Tiana and Naveen were turned into frogs- but a close runner up was the ice-skating Gator, LOL.

And of course, there is always the magic of Cinderella- a classic Disney tale. The favorite of so many little girls, and of course the Princess of the famous castle IN Disney that is like it’s own “Statue of Liberty”, lol, the show got some comic relief in the form of “evil stepsisters” Anastasia and Drusilla. They were silly, clown-like, and falling all over the place. I was a little nervous about the Evil Stepmother, that she may scare the kids- but not to worry. She was not nearly as intimidating as the movie version.

enjoying the show- intermission time!

Last but not least was Rapunzel, who longed to escape her tower and see the “floating lights” that appeared on her birthday each year. Her opportunity appeared in an unlikely way- as the thief Flynn was rushing to hide from his would-be captors for stealing, yet again. To evade capture, and to get back his stolen treasure (which the lady fair has hidden from him) he agrees to help Rapunzel [Read more…]

Mary Poppins- Disney on Broadway (Live Theater)

Last weekend, we had the opportunity to see Mary Poppins on Broadway, for it’s 5 year Anniversary. Not only that, but we were able to go backstage and check out some amazing props from other Disney shows, like The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Tarzan, Aida, and Beauty and the Beast. OK, nerd alert? Totally have seen them all, with the exception of Tarzan, LOL. Aida is one of my all time favorite shows, ever-ever, and I nearly had a heart attack standing backstage.

Did I mention I was a total Broadway lover and geek? OK, well, so what? And I am raising one to boot! My son, age 4, loves the theater, and sits rapt through shows, then listens to the CDs and learns them by heart. This wonderful experience was not one either of us will be forgetting, especially since he got to touch the props themselves!

Disney Theatrical’s VP of Operations Dana Amendola gave us all a backstage tour, and told us a bit about the history of the New Amsterdam Theater- by the way, when you go, see if you can find the hidden Micky Mouse! LOL There is a ghost of one of the original Ziegfeld Follies stars, Olive Thomas who resides there and will only show herself to men. The cure for this phenomenon was to only hire female security guards, since Olive was scaring all the men off, LOL. There is also a “listening post”, where critics could be listened to during the intermission of shows. If they didn’t seem to like what they were seeing, then they were invited up to have a drink with a Ziegfield girl after the show. I bet that changed quite a few minds! Ah, men. So easy to manipulate, LOL.

There were also these beautiful ornamental light fixtures, that were re-created by using descriptions from old diaries and journals. Women would write in great detail of their theater visits, and when the time came to re-construct and renovate the New Amsterdam, nothing was held back. The above was what was created from the descriptions- and right before the show opened, they found one of the original light fixtures, with lights and all still working- buried in a wall! Here was what it looked like-

Not bad, right? So close! And how cool, don’t you just love that story? They very quickly had a new batch made, replicating the newly-discovered old fixture, just in time for the re-opening.

Another Quite Famous Lady of the Theater!

These lovely and ornate carvings are found everywhere you look in the theater- many based on Shakespeare’s plays. Right now, if you go see Mary Poppins, you can get the added perk of being [Read more…]
