Taking Ginkgo Biloba? Maybe You Should Reconsider

pic7Alzheimer’s Disease runs in my family.  It’s a horrible disease, stripping your identity, abilities, and mind.  The victim of this disorder is left eventually helpless, unable to do anything for themselves, and not able to recognize family or friends.  Life skills vanish, they don’t know where or who they are- even what the date is.  It is a horrible way to live, and a terrible thing to watch someone go through.

Some people live decades with Alzheimer’s Disease.

For this reason, myself and many people in my family have been taking Ginkgo Biloba for years, as it was recommended and thought to ward off things like Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia, and sharpen the mind. Even doctors and pharmacists recommend it- it is the “most prescribed supplement in Germany (and apparently the treatment of choice for dementia), and is #9 in sales among herbals in the United States” (source- Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database).

However, I was at my neurologist yesterday (I suffer from migraines) and he told me that there have been new studies out that prove Ginkgo Biloba is not only ineffective, but also that it can cause seizures from long term use as well as lead to bleeding in the brain spontaneously or increasing any bleeding that may otherwise occur.  I began to read all the studies that he presented to me, and I will for sure not be taking Ginkgo Biloba any more.  There does not seem to be any benefit, but there does seem to be quite a few risks that I don’t need to take.

This Week On Nutrisystem

So, I didn’t use my Nutrisystem this week. I was in Norway, and I didn’t bring the food with me. I would not have been able to, with packing space and would have needed another bag just for it- plus I wasn’t sure there would be microwaves or ovens I would be able to use.  Also- I mean, I was in Norway.  I wanted to try the food!

The kicker?  I lost four pounds.  Hooray!  But frustrated- When I’m home, sticking to my diet and going to the gym, I lose one pound a week.  I go to Europe, overindulge, eat what I want, including desserts- and lose four.  What?  I swear, my body just likes to mess with me.  But I will take the weight loss, absolutely.  And we did do a lot of walking, so that helped I’m sure.

Week 9 On Nutrisystem

Another week, another pound.  We are headed to a bunch of water parks and theme parks this week, so there will be a ton of walking (ok, chasing) kids around- so even if I miss the gym, it will be OK- I’m sure to get my exercise in. I will be bringing my breakfast and lunch bars with me to stay with the plan while I travel, as well as a waterbottle to make sure I stay hydrated and to help me feel full.

Food Safe Families #WorldCupChat Twitter Party

Have you heard of the Food Safe Families Campaign (a partnership between The Ad Council, USDA, FDA and CDC)?  The Food Safe Families campaign shares simple, but important reminders of steps consumers can take year round to help keep their families safe from food poisoning.

Food poisoning is not simply an upset stomach; it is a serious public health threat in America. In fact, the CDC estimates that about 1 in 6 Americans (about 48 million people) could suffer from foodborne illness this year. To put that into perspective, that’s twice the amount of people (24 million) that watched the U.S. play Ghana in round 16 of the 2010 World Cup!

The result is approximately 128,000 hospitalizations and sadly, an estimated 3,000 deaths!

Join our Twitter Chat on June 17th at 1pm EST—just hours before the anticipated Brazil vs. Mexico game! We’ll be offering game-day party tips—just follow the hashtag #WorldCupChat for the English chat and #WorldCupFiesta for the Spanish version.

AARP – Caregivers Need Help, Too

profile4

It’s an honor to care for the person who cared for you. Taking care of an older parent can mean anything from handling their bills, to helping them with meals, to driving them to appointments, and more. Juggling all of those roles can be tough, but Father’s Day reminds us why we do it.

My grandfather struggled with a degenerative disease, and my grandmother had to assume a lot of the responsibility of taking care of him. Luckily, we had a large family who lived close by and were able to help, and being young and in college I was able to be at her “beck and call” so to speak- only a call or a page (yes, I’m old) away when she needed me.  Most of the responsibility fell on her, which was hard since she was older herself and also didn’t know how to deal with the rapid progression of the disorder.

Across the country 42 million people, primarily women, between the ages 40 – 60 are faced with the challenge of providing care to their older loved ones each and every day. They may not know it, but they are caregivers, and they play an extraordinary role in supporting those we love.

Week 8 On Nutrisystem

I lost another pound this week, whoohoo!  As slow as the weight loss has been for me, at least I am losing.  I am either going to the gym or doing a workout video 5 days a week, and I’m pretty active on the weekends anyway.  I want to see a bigger drop, so I am planning on giving my Nutrisystem counselor a call later on today to see if they have any tips for me that I am not currently doing.  As much as I know that it is not all in the scale, which is true-  I want to see the drop!  I feel good and have a lot of energy, so that’s great.  I spent a very active weekend (as any of you who follow me on Twitter, Foursquare, or Facebook know) and had no issues keeping up with 4 kids at a waterpark, so that’s good news.
