Movie Night: Must-See Family Classics

These days it seems like movies are either full of so much action and special effects that they don’t have
time to relate a story, they contain subject matter that is largely inappropriate for younger audiences, or
they work so hard to shove morals down your throat that you leave feeling like you just swallowed a bar
of soap. What happened to all the great family movies?! Well, luckily, they’re still around, and many
have found a new life thanks to re-release on Blu-ray. So here are a few classics you’ll definitely want to
share with the kids.

1. Toy Story (1995). Can you believe it’s been almost twenty years since this feature-length
animated movie put Pixar on our radar? The tale of toys that come to life when humans aren’t
around is sure to delight kids of all ages, but even with their first offering Pixar showed that they
knew how to spin a timeless story that could reach the hearts of kids and adults alike. So enjoy
the first adventure (in a series of three) that introduced Woody, Buzz, and the whole toy box to
an adoring public.

2. E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial (1982). I’m not afraid to admit that I cry every time I see this movie
usually multiple times throughout). But that hasn’t stopped me from watching it over and over.
Although you’ve probably seen it before, there’s nothing like watching it with your kids for the

Winter the Dolphin- an inspiring true story

When planning a visit to Clearwater, Florida, no trip would be complete without a trip to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. While it has been a Clearwater institution since 1978, it recently became quite famous for one reason- a little dolphin named “Winter”.

When little Winter was only 2 or 3 months old, she became tangled in a crab trap line, wrapping her into a “C” shaped position and (in short) killing her tail. Her peduncle (The lower trunk, extending from the dorsal fin to the fluke. The peduncle is very muscular and generates the power that propels dolphins through the water at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour) was ruined, and needed to be amputated.

Found in Florida’s Indian River Lagoon, several rescues collaborated to save her and bring her to Clearwater. None of them thought she would live, she was very young and small, and her injuries were very severe. While not a malicious attack, and purely accidental, she was still very stressed and this was very damaging to her and her hormones, which can have long term effects- as was having to be formula fed. Winter had no mom to protect and love her. She was named Winter because that is when she was found- in December of ’05.

She was with humans 24/7 for continues care, quality control, treatment, etc. After about 6 months, several cautious surgeries, weaning onto solid food, and the first prosthetic tail ever made incorporating a joint- Winter was placed with an older female “companion”, [Read more…]

Ring Around the Robots! Real Steel being released Jan 24

In anticipation for the January 24th release of REAL STEEL on Blu-ray & DVD, lets hear from the bots!

Zeus is the champ of the WRB. He is enormous. He is described as “The Death Star.” He is painted reflected black. He has piston-programmed punch mechanisms in his arms. Not only has Zeus never been beaten, but also, no other robot has even survived beyond the first round with him. Want some more “Real Steel”? How about an interview with Anthony Mackie?
ANTHONY MACKIE (Finn) trained at the Juilliard School of Drama. After receiving rave reviews playing Tupac Shakur in the off-Broadway production “Up Against the Wind,” Mackie made his feature-film debut as Eminem’s nemesis, Papa Doc, in Curtis Hanson’s “8 Mile.” Spike Lee subsequently cast Mackie in the 2004 Toronto Film Festival Masters Program selection “Sucker Free City” and “She Hate Me.” He also appeared in Clint Eastwood’s Academy Award
