Racecars are not just for boys, and neither is building them!  The purple and gray, hibiscus stripe-down the hood Modarri Cruzer is inspired by the company’s hometown of Santa Cruz, California appeals to both boys and girls.  This car has actual suspension, and patented finger-steering.  What does that mean?  Yes, it means you can steer with your finger. For real. It comes with it’s own color-coordinated tool to build it, and is recommended for ages eight and up, although my 7 year old had no trouble putting it together on his own.  This car can be rebuilt into 5 cars, giving your child hours of creative, hands on, building play that does not involve an app.  Get yours for  $19.95

My son really helped make these pancakes, so, yeah- a little messy. I told you- real life photos, LOL.

Weekend mornings are for lazy breakfasts, comics, and coffee (OK, or juice) at the table with the family.  But what if your morning gets a bit harried?  Maybe you want the Sunday breakfast experience on a Tuesday- or just before you head out to church on Sunday.  Cooking with your kids has never been easier then with Batter World- pancakes are ready to be poured into the pan from these ready to use pouches, available in three varieties- original, multi-grain, and gluten free.  Use what you want, cap the remainder and stick it in the ‘fridge for another time.  The batter pours from an easy to use spout, so kids can help out easily.  Ready made, ready to use- and yes, it tastes just as good as the kind you mix yourself (even the gluten-free, I promise, and I was ready to hate it).  Get yours at http://www.batterworld.com/

20150613_130435Want to pretend you are in the Old West?  No better way then with this awesome cotton and canvas teepee from Pacific Play Tents.  Once put together (with easy to assemble wooden poles) it stands at 8 feet tall- which is big enough for both the kids and even dad to get inside.  While tall, it’s not super wide, so you will be able to fit 2 or 3 people inside at a time, max. It has a mesh window so kids can watch for bad guys, or know when to attack should they BE the bad guys.  You know- however you’re rolling today.  Our dog got in on the action as well, because you know.  Kids and dogs, they hang together. It has a velcro opening, which makes comings and goings easy. AND FAST- because sometimes you gotta ditch the sheriff and stuff.  When you are done, you can either take it apart and store it in the cool bag it came in, or you can just “hug it” closed and put it into a corner until they want to play with it again.  Which will be in an hour.  You can pick one up at http://www.pacificplaytents.com/index.php/39615.html

Got a boy that likes to make things, and having a hard time finding cool stuff aimed at them? Or is it more of an UGH, crafts are super for girls!  Well, maybe, sometimes- lots of crafts and craft kits seem to be a little….um, pink and sparkly.  Or great for making earrings and BFF picture frames.  What’s a crafty boy to do?  ALEX, one of our favorite brands for kids, has a very cool DIY Cobra Bands kit. Boys can make their own bands in quite a few styles (and this will require learning some new skills should they not already have them) with very male-friendly colors that close with uber-boyish buckles.  Boys will learn to follow directions (skills they can always brush up on, thank you), acquire new techniques and knot-tying abilities (very manly, even the boy scouts teach this) and create the cobra knot! Even boys who are not the crafty-type will enjoy this one.  $18 at http://www.alextoys.com/product/diy-cobra-bands-2/

YOXO Join the Makers Movement #YOXOtoys

As our little ones grow up, it seems like their toys get more and more complex.  They start with simple push and pull cars and rattles, they morph into tech and “batteries not included” before you can blink an eye.  Every so often, a new toy comes along that puts electronic toys in their place and brings play time back to its roots with pieces that fit together in a creative way and are easy to fit together.

20150523_184132

YOXO is a fun new toy, named after the basic shapes of their building pieces, Y’s, X’s, and O’s.  Each of these shapes have small slits or longer slits depending on the shape, to accept other shapes attaching to them.  This can create some interesting shapes and creatures, with possibilities only limited by your imagination.  Each piece is cardboard, so it is completely recyclable.  The design may be simple, but the toy set itself is quite fun.  I’m not sure if it is because of the odd shapes of the pieces or because each piece fits into the next with little effort, but we really liked messing with it.  Whatever the reason, YOXO is quite fun to play with.

As far as the number of kits available, three are available at this point.  Doon, “Orig”, and Flye.  Orig is a rebellious robot who is the leader of the group and stands 18 inches tall.  Flye is a huge 4 foot dragonfly who has some unique oval shapes that really open up the possibilities of the set.  Last but not least is Doon, who is a dune buggy with moving wheels.  We gave Doon a try and were pleasantly surprised with how much fun it was to build and play with the set.  It kept my son and the husband busy for quite some time, so that was great for me.  I mean, them.

20150531_141411

“Doon is a 13-inch dune buggy kit for kids who are ready to take a ride. The 33-piece Doon kit includes everything you need to build your own recyclable YOXOmoto. Then take Doon apart and invent something new. Comes with custom moto parts, repositionable YOXO eye stickers in a sturdy box with a lid for easy storage. $19.99”

20150531_141423

These sets are now available at Target stores nationwide as well as YOXO kits are available at www.yoxo.com and at independent toy stores across the country.  Doon retails for $19.99, Flye retails for $24.99 and YOXObot “Orig” for $19.99.

Where are all the female superhero toys?

So, we were out looking for some Avengers toys recently, and my son is wondering why he can’t find a Black Widow Marvel Super Hero Masher.  I thought maybe they just hadn’t put it out yet, so I got my Google on and found that there is no such thing. She is also missing from all the Avengers packages of toys, the single action figures packages, and larger figurines.  What the heck?

20150507_163117

Then he wanted a Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy.  No?  None of those either?  Um, these are major characters- want to explain why there are no toys available?  At least not in the local Target or Toys R Us as of this post.

20150216_182106

I went through all my Toy Fair photos, and there just weren’t any- at least not in “masher”, Titan Hero, or Hulk Busters lines. You know, the popular variaties?  Nor in the “dress up” or role play items like masks or other “gear”.  Know who else was missing from the “masher” line?  There will soon be a Star Wars line.  Ask me where Princess Leia is?  Not. There.

He also pointed out that there is no Spider Girl or Spider Woman in the new Web Warriors toy series.  Black Widow was also missing for the “Avengers” Potato Head pieces. Part of the reason I didn’t notice the void is because I am not an avid superhero fan, and don’t read comics or watch the TV shows and movies much.  The other part of me just didn’t notice- which is sad.  I noticed them missing from the masher line, but thought perhaps it was something weird, like they didn’t want to cross genders maybe?  But they are crossing species, flora, robots, et all with humans- as long as they are all male trees, raccoons, robots, dinosaurs, etc. Actually, the first Jurassic Park movie had all female dinosaurs (you know, for control)- so maybe the new Jurassic World mashers are female?  Hm, lets find out. So, I’m thinking Gamora’s head on Hulk’s body isn’t the worst thing in the world, right?  They are both green, after all.

Can You Build It? Sure, Why Not?

Kids and building go hand in hand- make it bigger, higher, better, more greener- whatever strikes their fancy that particular day. And yes, greener is certainly a word, especially when preceded by “more”. Not only are building toys a good time, but they help with parent child bonding, motor skills and hand-eye coordination, social skills and cooperation, creativity, spatial skills, and more. So, lets get building!

IMG_0027

LEGO, of course, are great building toys. With many sets and sizes to choose from, there is something for every kid (and parent) to play with.  LEGO DC Comics Batman™: The Penguin Face off lets kids recreate and act out scenes from favorite superhero moments. The Penguin has stolen a diamond and has his minions guarding it- Batman must save the day, of course.  Complete with scuba Batman and Penguin minifigs, scuba vehicle and duck boat to build, it also has weapons (because what are superheros without their weapons), Penguin’s umbrella, 2 minion penguins, “diamond”, and more for about $13 on http://shop.lego.com.   Another cool thing about this set is that the Penguin and Duck Boat were also seen in the recent “LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League” movie.  While the movie is quite a mouthful, it was pretty funny, and a good flick for the whole family (and fans of LEGO and/or Superheroes).   If you want to play “real” heroes, take a look at the Swamp Police Starter Set.  For $10, you get 4 minifigs, an alligator, boat, raft, “hideout” spot, and quite a few accessories like a spider, snake, handcuffs, walkie talkie, shovel, and more.

Building toys don’t have to be all blocks, bricks, and hard edges anymore- have you met Bun Bun? These are soft and collectible stacking stuffed animals, created to be stacked and piled up.  Stacking plush toys have already created a splash overseas in countries like Japan, and they are now hitting the US markets. Bun Bun comes in a variety of sizes, colors, and animal varieties, and encourage kids to be creative and to see how high they can stack their new cuddly toys. Both boys and girls we have tested them with love them, and can’t get enough.  My son is in love, since they combine two of his favorite things- building and animals.  Stuffed animals?  Even better!

ULTIMATE SPIDER MAN Web Warriors Web Slingers

Spider-Man is a classic hero- smart, strong, fast, and a blast to follow in his comic books. His most recent adventures in Ultimate Spider-Man Web Warriors brings a new dimension to the classic character. That dimension is, well, new dimensions. No longer is Spider-Man the only web head who can save the day, now he has other ‘Spider-Men’ to help in his battles. His new friends include Iron Spider, Ultimate Spider-Man Miles, Agent Venom, and Scarlet Spider. Each Spider-Man is slightly different yet the same, with a background story that is familiar yet different. Miles’ story even involved the expiration of Peter Parker, the original Spider-Man in his dimension.

To bring this new story home for kids, Hasbro has released a line of new Web Warriors toys, which include new Web Slinging action. Each Web Slinger includes its own web to launch and has the ability to reach out and sling away. In addition to the various Spider-Men, also available is the Green Goblin and a nifty playset where web slinging is brought to life, the Web Slingers Trickshot Showdown Playset which is a web blasting arena which comes with 2 webs to sling, one 6 inch Spider-Man figure, and 5 targets, two of which are Venom and Green Goblin.

Getting Your Kids To Bed

Getting the kids to go to bed, and to STAY in bed, can be one of the hardest times of any parent’s day.  Starting, and keeping, a bedtime routine is always ideal- but what to do when that doesn’t do the trick?  Sometimes, having just the right “helper” is what the Sandman ordered.

Check out some of these fun and innovative new products for bedtime and beyond.

Have you met Brobo and his friends?  First introduced in 2012, but available in larger markets now in 2015, these fun and cuddly buddies will keep your kids company and scare away the darkness when it’s time for lights-out. There are several characters available- Brobo, Pep, Mumu, Trex, and Dog.  These adorable, futuristic robot friends are plush and soft, with glowing centers (think Iron Man’s glowing chest piece) that light up.  This is called “Shine Force”, and is activated by tapping it’s hand (or tail) to the light, which also vibrates.  $35 at www.brobo.com

Easter is around the corner so its time for those last minute basket fillers. What better way to make your little one’s day then with a Skylanders Easter? Skylanders are available in special limited release Easter versions of some of your favorite characters and even a special trap for the newest Skylanders game, Trap Team. Skylanders have always blended their toys and games in fun ways, and this newest game turns it up a notch. The premise of Trap Team is, by using the newest portal, portal masters, the players can now capture bosses from the game and call upon them to use in the game itself. It is an interesting concept and makes for a very interactive gaming experiences, even further blending reality with the digital world of Skylanders.

weeskylandersThe new Easter limited edition Skylanders are two fold, one is this year’s official mascot for the Annual Dragon Egg Hunt, Eggsellent Weeruptor. Sure, it isn’t the best way to celebrate Easter but it does make for an ‘Eggsellent’ adventure.
