Wordless Wednesday! Dolphins, anyone?

Clearwater, Florida- A Great Place to Vacation Year Round!

What’s better then waking up to the smell of the ocean? Not a whole lot.
Sigh.

Little Man on the beach

We started out our day with a fun Surry Bike ride from Fun Bike Rentals, right here at the Hilton Clearwater Beach Hotel. (Did I tell you this place had everything, or what?) The kids rode up from while daddy and I pedaled. We took the surry up the wide sidewalks, and down the beach a little bit. The kids had a really good time, and it was a fun way to get around and see the area.

Then we were off to Captain Bligh’s Landing Miniature Golf– a cute 18 hole mini-golf adventure that is fun for the whole family. Little Man especially enjoyed the pirate ship- and chasing the ball around. OK, so he didn’t really “get” mini-golf so much, but he had a great time playing, LOL. Bonus? There is a game-room attached to the campus. You can also buy soda, water, and ice cream- and guess what? They won’t even gouge you on the prices. A soda is only a dollar. Gotta love it when places actually keep in mind that families will be attending- and we all have budgets!

How cute is this, by the way? Clearwater is all about dolphins, and Captain Bligh didn’t forget that when decorating- check out the Captain’s very own [Read more…]

Save Zoar- A Historical Settlement in danger in Ohio @zoarohio

Why would anyone want to destroy a historic German settlement in Ohio? Who would do such a thing? Our federal government, that’s who. Zoar was founded in 1817 by German religious separatists to set up a communal society in a new way of life. Zoar is unique in the way it is preserved. A walk around Zoar is like stepping into a time machine. Everything is pristine, and you will be taking a stroll though our history.

Little Man, my grandmother, and I had a great time in historic Zoar– we checked out a metal-working shop, amazing gardens, a bakery, a tin shop where the town’s cups, bowls, etc were made. We saw the actual artifacts that the residents used, and were led on a tour by a descendant of the people of Zoar- her father had lived and worked there all his life. A quiet, hardworking, unassuming people who came to America for a better life and an opportunity for their families, they were often separated from each other for months and years at a time trying to pay back the loan from the land.

Take a look at more of our photos from our trip to Zoar here– and let me tell you, fall is a great time to visit.

These people wasted nothing- and especially not time- and did not have easy lives. These German separatists, mostly farmers, were persecuted in their own [Read more…]

TOP FIVE TIPS from Anthony Bourdain and “No Reservations”

Timed to the launch of Travel Channel’s “No Reservations” Collection 6 Part 1 DVD and the busy holiday travel season, Anthony Bourdain, the chef, author and host offers his top 5 travel tips on how to survive travel nightmares and make the most of any trip.

Below please find Anthony’s TOP FIVE TIPS to make holiday travel less hassle, and more fun!
Eat like a local. Wherever you are, eat what the locals are good at or famous for, and eat where those locals like to eat it. Do not rely on your concierge for dining tips. He’s in the business of making tourists happy. You want the places that make locals happy. Seek out places crowded with locals. Avoid places where others of your kind are present.
Show appreciation. People everywhere like it when you are appreciative of their food. I cannot stress enough how important your initial reactions [Read more…]

A Brief Florida Visit

Because I am monster exhausted, I am going to keep this one short and sweet- but I just met up with a long time internet buddy for the first time ever. Fun!

We hung out at Ponce De Leon National Park, then went for dinner at Pittmasters BBQ (where I ate WAY too much and can promise you I was not, not, not on any kind of Nutrisystem! LOL)

It was so nice to meet Miss Grace [Read more…]

Here We Are in Florida! So- Where to stay in Clearwater?

Yay, we made it to Florida! We are in Clearwater, at the Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort. It is only 20 minutes from the Tampa Airport, and so easy to find. Oh, and did I mention it’s completely beautiful here? And it was 78 degrees when we landed? Bye-bye, winter weather!

The Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort is not just a beautiful hotel, but is super centrally located. The hotel itself is right on the beautiful, sandy white beach- you walk out the door (or look out your balcony) and there it is- the ocean. The beach! Powder soft sand meets your steps, there is a shower when you are ready to rinse off and head back to the room- or maybe just one of the two pools (or hot tub!)

The pool was so warm, and I love the little ledge around the entire thing. Lets you just still and relax.

After we relaxed poolside for a bit, we went right next door to Pier 60- The Sunsets at Pier 60 (literally, next door) have nightly celebrations that take place on Pier 60 Park on Clearwater Beach. This free family-friendly nightly event is the place to be for art, crafts, street performances, musical entertainment, the park (several large areas, actually) and even free movies on a large screen- tonight, it was The Grinch! The [Read more…]
