Mount Airy Casino Resort in the Poconos

Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains are home to the Mount Airy Casino Resort. Centrally located just 90 minutes from Philadelphia, NYC, and Northern NJ the casino offers 1,800 slot machines and 80 table games for visitors that are looking for some excitement. Mount Airy spa and golf course will appeal to visitors looking to relax and be pampered, or get out on the course for some sunshine. Catch a show or go for a swim while you escape to the pleasures of a casino resort.

Water features, sculptures, and a 51,000 square foot pool will be a highlight for hotel guests. A four season attraction complete with indoor/outdoor access, poolside bar, and luxury cabanas will keep you and your party occupied, relaxed, and refreshed. Families should keep in mind that kids and teens need to be accompanied by an adult while in the pool area.  They also need to be escorted by an employee when on the main floors and between rooms and restaurants- this might be a location that is best suited for couples or a girlfriend getaway/men’s weekend away.

Enjoy the food network? Check out one of their star’s restaurants Guy Fieri’s Mt. Pocono Kitchen. No matter what time you start to feel a craving for American favorites like hearty chicken soup or chicken fried steak you can head to Guy’s. The kitchen is open 24 hours as day. Another option is Bistecca by Il Mulino. Open for dinner every night the experience and luxury will make any evening a special event.

The food at Mt. Airy is delicious- every restaurant we tried was better then average at worst, while most of the dishes went into the “amazing” category. We ate more then we should have, and more then we intended.  It was a filling kind of weekend.

The resort also offers live shows and performances by all sorts of artists and musicians- both the general public and hotel guests are able to attend. There are many acts and much variation in types and genres,  so something will surely appeal to nearly everyone.

If you are looking for a good time in a nearby local, this is certainly one to look into. Valentines Day is right around the corner, see what they still have open and book a romantic weekend!

Ski Mountain High in California

Just outside LA you can hit the slopes!

A short drive from the major cities in Southern California, Mountain High Ski Resort is a must visit this winter. Whether you are a skier, snowboarder, or looking to go down the hill by sled this is the place. My visit was a pleasure from start to finish. The drive is pleasant, the food is tasty, and the winter sports are where it’s at.

Me in my Mountain High Yeti mask!

If you didn’t know January is National Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month. So I figured I would take on the challenge at Mountain High. Skiing is totally new to me and I could not have picked a better destination to get started. Everyone raved about their ski instructors and I agree. Mountain High has a top notch ski school, their instructors are certified PSIA and AASI, use the latest equipment, and boast some of the highest success rates in the country with lessons for all skill levels.

If you are an expert already there is plenty to keep you busy. Mountain High is broken into three resorts, East, West, and North. Each is packed full of great runs and when the weather gifts SoCal with snow we are ready to rock. There are 290 acres of skiable terrain, The trail breakdown is 25% Beginner, 40% Intermediate, 35% Advanced to keep everyone racing along. With a maximum elevation of 8,200 feet keep hydrated and don’t be surprised if you get winded more easily. Hydration is key.

Mountain High’s North Pole Tubing Park offers some family fun for everyone no lessons required! They have ten lanes of high speed sledding with a magic carpet to get you back up to the top of the hill! All the fun and none of the awkward climb with your tube to suck up your energy. The Park is only open on weekends and holidays weather permitting so make sure you check online.

NORTH POLE TUBING PARK PHOTOGRAPHER: MOUNTAIN HIGHYou can read up on all of the ski and weather reports before you go, and you should! The drive is not terribly windy, but you might need chains on your tires at certain times. Or you can take advantage of my favorite feature, the Rally Bus. Go from one of the central pick-up points in LA or Orange County and avoid the drive all together! If you are a local who has never dealt with icy road conditions keep that option in mind.

Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown

History is fun in Virginia!

American History might only go back a few hundred years, but amazingly it is still alive and well at the Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. These two locations give new life to the pages of your school textbooks. There, you can see what the days were like for the early colonists in Jamestown, then travel to the nearby American Revolution Museum and compare their experiences to those of families and soldiers a century later. Both are pivotal times in the development of our country and you don’t want to miss out on either experience. Take a day and spend it at these two great locations.

America’s first permanent English colony, the Jamestown Settlement, is an opportunity to embrace the experience of the early colonists. Living history reenactments of a Powhatan Indian village, climbing on board the recreated English ships, and a colonial fort immerse visitors in the sights, sounds, and even smells of daily life in the early 17th century. The interaction continues, and you can watch demonstrations and ask questions of the ‘costumed historical interpreters’ (the official job title of the reenactors).

Exhibits and galleries display artifacts and tell the story of European colonization. The impact of settlements like Jamestown on the local Powhatan Indians is a fascinating topic to investigate. There is also information on the first Africans known to come to Virginia. The cultures of three continents coming together is an amazing look into the origins of America. The documentary they show, 1607: A Nation Takes Root, starts your journey into the past. From there families, can enjoy time spent learning just how different life would be if they were born 400 years ago.

The American Revolution Museum at Yorktown ramps up the action. The dramatic events of the Revolution can be seen throughout the museum galleries or on the 180-degree surround screen film. Visitors can watch “The Siege of Yorktown” then go on to tour and compare it to the modern day city.  Kids will love all of the activities at the Continental Army encampment and the recreated 18th century farm. Join the American regiment for drills or watch artillery fire while chatting with soldiers. This and so much more is embodied with the American Revolution Museum’s living history exhibits.

Both the Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown will wow history lovers and get kids excited about learning. Set aside at least four hours to enjoy everything they have to offer. There are even specials available if you decide to visit both on your trip. Make it a historic day in Virginia and visit the Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown.

Coming up shortly is the yearly event Military Through the Ages, Jamestown Settlement – Military re-enactors and modern-day units show how uniforms, weapons, and military tactics evolved through the centuries. You can see this impressive display of armed forces from March 17-18- any history or military enthusiast will have a blast (pun intended). There are live  re-stagings, weapons and ammunitions use, reenactments of battles, and more. Some of the costumed re-enactors tell stories, give lessons, and help kids make crafts, “weapons” of their own, battle flags, instruments, learn to lead (or take part in) battles, parades, cook on open fires, explain how life was in his or her time period- the list goes on and on. Explore (recreations of) boats that once sailed the open seas- and how cramped the quarters were for sailors and settlers. Make sure you visit the recreated Native American village to get to know a bit about the people of the Powhatan Tribe.  There is so much to do during the Military Through the Ages event, there is no way to get it all done. It is one of the most fun learning experiences you will have with your children- just don’t tell them how much they will learn.

Check out their websites for more details, tickets, and times.

Chill at the Queen Mary, Long Beach Ca.

A Winter Wonderland in Southern California!

Chill at the Queen Mary is the United States’ first-ever Ice Adventure Park and it is a great way to enjoy the Holiday Season. With the beautiful Queen Mary ship lit for the Holidays in the background Chill is a lovely destination of lights and activities. There are any number of adventures to enjoy, from the sweet, to the bumpy, to the high flying, they have options for the whole family. Why not also enjoy some seasonal specialties of both food and drink to add to the experience.

The most obvious activity for an Ice Park is skating of course and that is the center piece of Chill. Included in the price of admission this will keep you busy as you skate from section to section. Skate through a giant igloo dome showing the Northern Lights, enjoy the live shows on the different stages along the path. You can hop off at the Swiss Chalet for a snack, or to take a break. A large portion of the park is accessably by foot or skate.

The next Winter classic that comes to mind is sledding. My favorite to enjoy is Chill’s tubing hill where you can race down next to your friends and family. If something milder or for the very little ones is more your speed check out a ride on the Worlds Largest Rocking Horse! If you get the Ultimate Expedition there are some more rides included or for an additional fee you can ride the bumper boats, take a turn around the speedway on a tricycle, or zipline in the park. Feeling creative? Try your hand at decorating a stocking or a gingerbread house. You can also take a break for the 4D Rudolph video on the actual ship theatre and get a look inside the Queen Mary.

The Park is broken up into different countries to offer an International flare to Chill. Germany, Holland, Switzerland, China, Russia, and the North Pole! Each offers their own activities, live performances, and seasonal treats. Pretzels, beer, and an authentic Alpine band in Germany. Shuffleboard on ice and vodka at the Palace Ice Bar which is kept frozen by keeping the room at freezing temperatures. China has dumplings, a winter favorite there, and the best shows! Acrobats, the costumed Lion Dance, and Shaolin Monks all take the stage in front of the Tea House where you can get a hot drink before sitting down to watch.

Chill at the Queen Mary runs now through January 7th 2018. A visit to the Ice Park is a lovely taste of winter with an International flare for locals or tourists. Expect to be at the park for the night if you are going to experience everything Chill has to offer. Glass Bottom Boats on Catalina Island

Sea life up close while staying dry.

When visiting Catalina Island checking out the underwater sea life is a highlight of the trip. These waters are home to a diverse group of fish including the Garibaldi, the state fish of California. There are a few options when approaching these Pacific Ocean natives, like hopping right in the water and swimming with the fishies. Another is the adventure of a Glass Bottom Boat Voyage from the Catalina Island Company. It’s kinda like a car’s moon roof in the floor of the boat, a comfortable seat with a view!

The very first glass bottom boats were used sailing around Santa Catalina Island and the tradition continues today. You can visit under the sea with a boat ride through the kelp forests of the Lover’s Cove Marine Preserve. Schools of fish make their home in these protected waters. As the boat makes its way along the sea floor the bright orange Garibaldi fish are easy to pick out. Large black sea bass swim like moving shadows amongst the kelp and under the boat.

There are two options for the water boat tours available, the traditional boat and the Undersea Expedition in a Sea Wolf Semi-Submersible Vessel. If you prefer to take in some fresh air while on the water the first option is ideal. Kids might appreciate the submarine like experience of the Sea Wolf as well. Both of these tours gives a great view and the tours are a similar length. Pick your vessel and you are ready to get out there and see the sea.

Since the days when sailers began to cut panels out of their boats and replace the floor boards with glass Catalina has been the ideal spot for underwater tourism. Today they have perfected the experience. Don’t miss an opportunity to see it all without getting in the water yourself.

A Day at Glen Ivy Hot Springs

An outdoor spa not to be missed!

Glen Ivy Hot Springs located in Corona California, just south of Los Angeles is the spot for relaxation and fun. The grounds are positively beautiful. The soothing sound of running water from strategic fountains and a small constructed stream with waterfalls adds a natural soundtrack to your visit. There are plenty of options to pick from, saline pools, the natural hot springs, hot and cold pools to splash back and forth between, and the highlight of the visit, Club Mud! This was my first experience covering myself in red clay and I can not wait to do it again.

You want to set aside more than five hours for your visit and definitely consider being there the whole day. Summer hours are considerably longer of course so keep in mind that after Nov. 1 – Feb. 28 they close at five instead of nine. Glen Ivy offers more than just the spa experience, massages, skin treatments, and salon services are all available during your visit. If you are getting a service and having a leisurely meal this is an all day event.

I got the mud massage which is designed to detox the body and man does it work. I could feel the stress and cruddy build up from my muscles sucked right out of my back. Christina my masseuse was knowledgeable with a firm hand, adjusting all my sore spots and leaving me feeling stretched and relaxed. I would recommend if you are getting massage done you either plan it first, or bring a second swim suit though. Putting back a cool wet suit after a nice warm massage was not ideal.

There are two places to eat on site and you can even enjoy a cocktail while soaking in the sun.
The food is excellent. Some of the ingredients are even grown on the property and those that aren’t are still amazingly fresh. The nachos are a must share. The portion is huge and these are the best nachos I have ever eaten. The cheese sauce is a perfect balance of cheesy, without being overwhelming or greasy. The salad tasted as good as it looked and it looks stunning! Definitely plan on spending the time to eat here.

Glen Ivy Hot Springs is perfect for a ladies day or couples getaway. A day outside surrounded by nature and good company is the best retreat you can find. I made this trip with a friend and I am excited to return again for a couples spa visit. Your first visit will not be your last.

*Mud is fabulously fun and the Club Mud is the best, BUT pick a bathing suit without white! The mud definitely takes some work to get out and white may not recover.

A Visit to Catalina Island

It begins with a boat ride…

Located off the coast of Southern California, Catalina Island is a vacation destination and adventure start to finish. From the beautiful vistas to the quaint town of Avalon, Catalina is worthy of its hundred plus years as a travelers’ oasis. To get to the island you have two options, boat or helicopter. Most of the islands visitors go by way of ocean travel which takes a little over an hour.

There are two major towns on the island but Avalon is by far the most popular and iconic. Much of the island is undeveloped and now home to herds of bison, wild foxes, and deer. You can even catch sight of a bald eagle if you head out on one of the nature tours of the island.

JazzTrax Festival. Hearing live music where Hollywood stars of the Golden Age partied is a thrill. Or you can catch a movie downstairs in the art deco theatre. Taking a Casino Tour to learn the building’s history is a great way to get a look at everything as well.

Another adventure on Catalina Island is the underwater activities. Swimming, scuba diving, and snorkeling are a big draw.  One option to see the abundant sea life is to get in and get wet, but certain months of the year that is less enticing than others. If you want to get up close and personal while staying dry give the Glass Bottom Boat Tour a try. You can go out and give catching your dinner a try too. The island is known for its great fishing.

Even if you don’t reel anything in you won’t be short on seafood to enjoy. There are restaurants all over Avalon serving fresh fish and other delicacies. With so many options to chose from a Taste of Catalina Food Tour is a way to get started. Visit some Island hot spots on this guided tour which blends Island history, and I spy into a drinking game of Bingo.

The Catalina Island Museum is not to be missed. Learn the history of the island from the first people to live there, through the Spanish explorers, to the purchase of the land by the Wrigley Family. Sports fans will appreciate the ties to the Chicago Cubs who came out for spring training from 1921-1951. Not to mention the art at the museum. Their Chihuly Glass exhibit is stunning.

There are plenty of hotels and Bed and Breakfasts to chose from for your stay. A couple days is perfect to see the island. Our ride back was at sunset and it could not have been a lovelier end to the trip. Overall we loved the island so much that we are planning another trip back to visit again and take part in even more of the activities offered there. My snorkel gear will be packed next time for sure!
