4 Railway Journeys to Take with Your Kids

In the current computer-crazed world, most kids end up with a cell phone and/or an iPad before they have even hit their teens. While this can be great for the peace of mind of their parents, it can stop children from really seeing the world around them.

After all, kids love using technology and regularly have to be dragged away from their phones and tablets kicking and screaming, even if it’s just to eat a family meal together. This can pose a problem on holidays, in particular. If you’d like to see your child really taking in the sights on your next family vacation, perhaps consider booking in for a railway journey where you can all sit back together and spend time simply enjoying the view.

There is a vast array of breathtaking trips that can be taken on trains around the world, but yet don’t necessarily involve days and days spent stuck in a carriage. Whether you want to start off slowly with just a short, one-hour ride, or would like to select a journey that lasts a whole day at least, you’re sure to find something for your family to try across the globe.

Read on for four top railway journeys that will help your family to see some of the most picturesque places around the world in a more leisurely, and technology-free, way.

1. Talyllyn Railway in Wales

If your children grew up listening to the many tales of Thomas the Tank Engine, then they’ll love a trip on the Talyllyn Railway in Wales. The 14.5-mile round-trip train ride was what inspired the author of the books, Reverend Wilbert Awdry, to write the now-famous series that has encouraged children all around the world to read.

The Talyllyn Railway runs through the mid-Wales countryside from Tywyn to Abergynolwyn and Nant Gwernol, at a leisurely pace of nine miles per hour or less. The Talyllyn locomotives and carriages date all the way back to 1865 and are now run by a group of dedicated volunteers.

2. Kuranda Scenic Railway in Australia

One of the “must-do” train trips in Australia for families has to be the Kuranda Scenic Railway in Queensland. The Railway is more than 100 years old and the historic train winds its ways from Cairns up to the quaint village of Kuranda, a small suburb situated around 15.5 miles northwest of the city. During this unique two-hour train trip (a perfect length of time for young kids with short attention spans), families can take in breathtaking views of ancient rainforests, waterfalls, and ravines as the journey takes passengers through hand-made tunnels and across towering bridges that have stood the test of time.

New grizzly bear exhibit at Central Park Zoo

The WCS Central Park Zoo is opening an exhibit for rescued grizzly bears today.

The exhibit will open as the new home for two adult female grizzlies, Betty and Veronica, who were rescued in 1995 and brought to the Bronx Zoo. Betty originally came to New York from Montana and Veronica from Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Both had become too accustomed to humans, and local authorities considered them a danger to people.

The bears are living in a remodeled habitat formerly occupied by polar bears. Significant portions of the exhibit renovation were made possible thanks to the generous support of Sandra de Roulet. Her generosity also helps support the care of all the bears in WCS’s zoos. The upper level viewing area of the Central Park Zoo exhibit has been “Treena’s Overlook,” a play on a nickname de Roulet had as a child. At this overlook, visitors will learn how people can better coexist with bears in the wild.

Norwegian Breakaway Cruise Day 4

Today we woke up to a beautiful, sunny day and gorgeous view. The sparkling blue waters of Nassau were right outside our door, and we could not wait to greet them in person.

family travel

After a quick breakfast, we headed into town. We walked through the shopping district a bit, but mostly were interested in some beach time. The closest one was Junkanoo Beach (also known as “The Long Warf”), about 15 minutes away. As soon as we arrived, it was time to hit the beach. We of course had to build sandcastles, then my son and I were in the water for most of the day. Daddy preferred his beach time. (Hmmmmm….ha)

After spending most of the day, we decided to head back. We stopped in a few local stores (we were looking for something special for a friend of ours who made a request) and headed back to the ship. After grabbing a quick bite to eat, we showered and headed down to the “Breakaway Pier Party”, which was so much fun. The crew was out en masse, dancing and partying the whole time.

Even SpongeBob and Patrick got in on the action, and posed for some photos with the kids as well.

SponeBob was a dancing machine, let me tell you . He really knows how to bust a spongy move.

We stayed out for nearly the whole party, and were having a great time- it really was super fun. One thing that stuck me as well was that Julie, the Cruise Director, who is Canadian but whose last name I don’t know- was out on stilts. She is the one in the pink pants. Really! That’s something. One of the kids club crew was the clown on stilts- very multi- talented. Julie also danced in the last song in “Burn the Floor”, and will soon make several more appearances today. The woman does not mess around.
